Both Aston Villa and Bayern Munich started their Champions League campaigns with solid victories, but this week they will be looking to follow up against a much more tricky opponent.
Villa were last in what is now the Champions League in 1982/83 and even won the competition the year before, while Bayern are always playing in Europe’s top competition due to their usual dominance of their domestic league.
Both teams started the season in relatively good form, only for both to draw this weekend. Aston Villa’s visit to Ipswich ended 2-2, and Bayern drew 1-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen which ended their perfect start.
Aston Villa failed to have a perfect start to the season after they lost to Arsenal in their second match. Other than that defeat however, they have looked strong in each game.
Aston Villa Predicted Lineup - Emiliano Martinez; Ian Maatsen, Pau Torres, Diego Carlos, Ezri Konsa; Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana; John McGinn, Morgan Rogers, Leon Bailey; Ollie Watkins
Due to the quick turnaround in fixtures, Unai Emery may look to make a few changes to the line up that faced Ipswich last week, however that will be made difficult by a lack of depth, especially at the back.
One player who will almost certainly start is Morgan Rogers. The young attacking midfielder joined Villa in January and has been setting the Premier League on fire as of late. The biggest stage awaits him and an England call up might not be far away, however with the likes of Cole Palmer in his position, he might struggle to break into the Three Lions squad.
Bayern Munich Predicted Lineup - Manuel Neuer; Alphonso Davies, Kim Min-Jae, Dayot Upamecano, Joshua Kimmich; Leon Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlovic; Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise; Harry Kane
It is expected that Harry Kane will be fit enough to start after an injury scare at the weekend. The English striker was substituted off after receiving treatment for an ankle injury. After medical tests on Sunday it was announced that the injury was not serious and Kane himself said that he expected to play against Aston Villa.
As well as the goal scoring machine that is Harry Kane, Bayern have a lot of exciting players that Aston Villa will need to keep an eye on. One of those is a familiar name to Premier League fans as Michael Olise will be returning to England for the first time after leaving Crystal Palace in the summer. He has impressed in Germany so far and is keeping Leroy Sane out of the starting XI.
These two sides have met just once before, all the way back in 1981/82. It was the European Cup final and Aston Villa beat the German side 1-0, lifting the trophy for the first and only time.
Villa have only recently got back to the top level of football, having been relegated from the Premier League in 2016 and earning promotion back into the top flight in 2019. Bayern meanwhile have dominated German football since 2012. Only last season’s little blip has hinted that their dominance could be broken.
26th May 1982 - Bayern Munich 0-1 Aston Villa - European Cup
Bayern Munich are obvious favourites for this game, but I think Aston Villa shouldn’t be discounted. The German side’s last Champions League game ended 9-2, so while they did blow away Dinamo Zagreb, they failed to keep a clean sheet.
Villa are at home, and are better than Zagreb, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll get a win here. Bayern are simply the better side and their attacking talent is some of the best in the world.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for Bayern Munich to Win and BTTS. Odds of 19/10 on Coral means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £29.
(odds subject to change)
Aston Villa 1-3 Bayern Munich
Bayern will start the game strongly as they will want to silence the Villa Park crowd. Should that happen, the game will only go one way. It is likely that Villa will have opportunities to score, but Bayern will take their chances more convincingly with the clinicality of Kane up front.
Aston Villa are not the only English team in action this week as Manchester City travel to Slovan Bratislava and Arsenal host PSG.
