This Wednesday’s Premier League action sees Liverpool make the trip to face Aston Villa at Villa Park. This is a big match for the away side as a win would see them 10 points clear of second place.
Both teams come into this game in hit and miss form. Liverpool have won three out of five of their last matches, drawing and losing the two remaining matches. Aston Villa on the other hand have only lost once in their last five but that is met with two wins and two draws. This Wednesday, despite the wishy-washy form that the each club has displayed, looks to be a highly entertaining match which could end up going either way.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted Line-Up: Emi Martínez; Lucas Digne, Tyrone Mings, Axel Disassi, Andrés García; Youri Tielemans, John McGinn (c); Marcus Rashford, Morgan Rogers, Jacob Ramsey; Ollie Watkins
Aston Villa have had a decent start to the season even though they stand lower than they ended last year’s campaign, finding themselves just inside the top half of the table. After 25 games they sit in ninth place with 10 wins, seven loss and eight draws. Those matches have left them with 38 points, just one point behind eighth placed Fulham and three points behind seventh placed Newcastle United.. A win and results going their way could see them overtake only Fulham though as Newcastle have a much better goal difference. Stepping up this season for The Villains has been striker Ollie Watkins. The 29 year old has found the back of the net 11 times this season, companied with five assists. If he can’t make the difference for Villa this Saturday then Unai Emery always has the option of subbing on their January transfer window acquisitions in Marco Asencio and Marcus Rashford. The pair of them have impressed in the few games they’ve featured in and there is no reason to say they won’t impress again on Wednesday.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted Line-Up: Alisson; Andy Robertson, Virgil Van Dijk (c), Ibrahima Konaté, Trent Alexander-Arnold; Alexis Mac Alister, Ryan Gravenberch; Luis Díaz, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah; Diogo Jota
Liverpool have had an excellent start to the season, finding themselves as league leaders now almost halfway through the campaign. After 25 games they sit in first place with 18 wins, one loss and six draws. Those matches have left them with 60 points, holding an outstanding seven point gap to second placed Arsenal. In the goals The Reds has been the unstoppable force of Mohamed Salah, having a Balon D’Or worthy season. The Egyptian has found the back of the net 23 times this season, the highest tally out of all the players in the Premier League. It hasn’t just been the spectacular goal output for Salah like it usually is, but Salah has been a provider for 14 assists to his teammates. He has been directly involved in around 61% of the 60 goals that Liverpool have scored this season, making him irreplaceable. He will most probably be the star of the show once more this Wednesday but if he is not then his fellow winger on the opposite side of the pitch, Luis Díaz or Cody Gakpo depending on who Arne Slot prefers as they both have registered 11 goal involvements each.
The last five faceoffs have been split in the favour of Liverpool, winning three out of five matches and drawing with Aston Villa in the remaining two games. This Wednesday could be business as usual for Liverpool but it will be a tough match to call.
