Atletico Madrid are in good stead to challenge for the La Liga title this season, however this week they are in action in the Last 16 of the Copa del Rey. They travel to second division side Elche to try and book a place in the quarter final. Elche and Almeria are the last two second division sides still in the competition however there are still two third division sides still in as well.
Elche are doing their best to get promoted back into La Liga this season following their relegation in the 2022/23 season. They are currently second in the Segunda Division and are defensively solid. In their most recent match they beat Real Zaragoza 1-0 thanks to a last minute winner from substitute Elbasan Rashani.
Atletico Madrid are similarly strong at the back, having conceded fewer goals than anyone else in La Liga. They also won 1-0 in their most recent game, beating Osasuna thanks to a striker from record signing Julian Alvarez. They will be wanting to win La Liga first and foremost this season, but that doesn’t mean that they will neglect the Copa del Rey.
Elche Predicted Lineup - Miguel San Roman; Jose Salinas, David Affengruber, Bambo Diaby, Alvaro Nunez; Nicolas Castro, Aleix Febas; Yago Santiago, Rodri Mendoza, Nicolas Fernandez; Agustin Alvarez
Elche have a strong squad for the second tier of Spanish football, but when put up against a side like Atletico Madrid, reality starts to set in. They have some talented individuals but if they are to win this week, it will be down to the qualities they have as a unit rather than individual moments. This is demonstrated by how spread out their goals are across the team. Mourad El Ghezouani is their top goalscorer with six however he is often used from the bench with Agustin Alvarez, their main striker, on five.
Atletico Madrid Predicted Lineup - Juan Musso; Javi Galan, Clement Lenglet, Robin Le Normand, Nahuel Molina; Conor Gallagher, Pablo Barrios, Rodrigo De Paul, Giuliano Simeone; Julian Alvarez, Antoine Griezmann
Diego Simeone hasn’t tended to change his team around much for their Copa del Rey fixtures which perhaps implies his intent on going far in this competition. However, even with this strong line up, his side still struggled to get past Marbella in the last round of the cup.
Alexander Sorloth is Atletico’s top scorer in the league this season with eight goals despite him not starting many matches. Julian Alvarez will be disappointed with how he has started life in Spain however his tally of goals is growing steadily after a very shaky start. Antoine Griezmann has been as reliable as always for Atletico, with seven in the league.
Elche aren’t a mainstay in the top flight of Spanish football, so they don’t face Atletico Madrid every season. The last time these two sides met was in Elche’s relegation campaign, however they did manage a shocking 1-0 win over Atletico on their way down. The last time they met in the Copa del Rey was in 2017, in which Atletico won 3-0.
14th May 2023 - Elche 1-0 Atletico Madrid - La Liga
29th Dec 2022 - Atletico Madrid 2-0 Elche - La Liga
11th May 2022 - Elche 0-2 Atletico Madrid - La Liga
22nd Aug 2021 - Atletico Madrid 1-0 Elche - La Liga
1st May 2021 - Elche 0-1 Atletico Madrid - La Liga
This game will probably be quite low scoring given the defensive capabilities of both teams however Atletico Madrid have the quality to get the ball over the line in both senses of the term. Elche are a good side but they lack the star quality in attack that Atletico Madrid have and I think that will be their downfall.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for Atletico Madrid to Win to Nil*. Odds of 13/8 on Parimatch means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £26.25.
