Following England’s shock defeat to Greece on Thursday night, Lee Carsley’s squad travel to play Finland on Sunday 13th October 2024 in what is now a must win game.
Finland will look to provide another shock England defeat as they look to bounce back from their defeat at the hands of the Republic of Ireland.
Both teams come into this game on the back of defeats. Something they will look to turn around.
Carsley in particular will be looking for more from his England squad following a shock defeat at the hands of Greece at Wembley on Thursday night. If he is to get the position on a permanent basis a win is a necessity.
Finland Predicted Lineup - Lukas Hradecky; Tomas Galvez, Robert Ivanov, Arttu Hoskonen, Adam Stahl; Leo Walta, Rasmus Schuller, Glen Kamara; Oliver Antman, Joel Pohjanpalo, Robin Lod
Finland come into this game placed at the bottom of League B Group 2 having lost each of their three games played. A 3-0 defeat to Greece, a 2-0 defeat to their opponents on Sunday and a 2-1 loss to the Republic of Ireland in their last game doesn’t put them in good stead.
Not only this but they have only scored one goal so far in the UEFA Nations League. This while conceding seven.
If players like Robin Lod, who has seven goals and 13 assists in the MLS this season, can be on top form you never know Finland could pull off a shock result. Despite this, it will still be a tough task coming up against this England side.
England Predicted Lineup - Jordan Pickford; Rico Lewis, Levi Colwill, John Stones, Trent Alexander-Arnold; Declan Rice, Angel Gomes; Anthony Gordon, Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer; Harry Kane
England took a shock defeat at the hands of Greece in their previous match. Losing 2-1 thanks to a last gasp winner from Vangelis Pavlidis.
It may be argued that injuries have affected the England squad however this should be no reason to be defeated in such a manner. They were expected to win the match against Greece.
With that result they moved down to second in the group on six points from three games. A win in this match is now a must.
The two goals they conceded against Greece were the only goals they have conceded in the UEFA Nations League so far. They are often defensively solid - especially since Carsley took over as interim manager. And they also clearly have the ability to score goals and create chances. They have scored five already this campaign.
A win here will be a necessity for England though in order to go back to the top of the group. And if Carsley wants to get the job permanently, he cannot be leading England to defeats in games like this.
England have played Finland twelve times in total.
Unbelievably, England have never lost to Finland picking up ten victories and being held to a draw twice. Can England continue that amazing record in this game?
10th September 2024 - England 2-0 Finland - UEFA Nations League
24th March 2001 - England 2-1 Finland - FIFA World Cup Qualifying
11th October 2000 - Finland 0-0 England - FIFA World Cup Qualifying
3rd June 1992 - Finland 1-2 England - International Friendly
22nd May 1985 - Finland 1-1 England - FIFA World Cup Qualifying
England will come into this game looking to turn things around after that difficult defeat on Thursday. Coming up against a weak, out of form, Finland side this will be a huge opportunity to do so.
Finland struggles to score goals, especially against bigger sides with strong defences, and despite conceding two in the last game England are normally fairly solid at the back.
This is why we are backing odds of 11/10 for England To Win To Nil in this match. These odds mean that £10 has the potential to return up to a possible £21.
(Odds subject to change)
Finland 0-3 England
England will be keen to win this game and get back on track. Finland are a much weaker side so this should be a comfortable victory for them. They will win and keep a clean sheet.
