Boxing Day action doesn’t get much better than 1st vs 3rd in the Championship. Burnley will travel east to face Sheffield United, both got relegated from the Premier League last year and just four points separate the sides.
Both teams are looking to bounce straight back to the Premier League and are currently on track to do so. Neither side has lost a match yet in the month of December. Burnley have won their last two games by a score of 2-1, and the Blades have won their last two games by a score of 2-0.
Predicted Line Up (4-2-3-1): Mike Cooper, Alfie Gilchrist, Harry Souttar, Jack Robinson, Harrison Burrows, Sydie Peck, Vinicius Souza, Gustavo Hamer, Callum O’Hare, Jesuran Rak-Sakyi, Kieffer Moore.
Sheffield United broke the unwanted record of the most goals ever conceded in a Premier League season last year, seeing the ball hit the back of their net 104 times. It could’ve been expected that last season’s bottom-placed side would struggle the most out of the relegated teams, but instead, they are at the top of the table for Christmas despite facing a deduction of two points at the beginning of the campaign.
Gustavo Hamer has shown once again why he is arguably too good for the second tier this season, with five goals and five assists so far. Playing in one of the three spots behind Sheffield’s striker, Hamer finds a way to influence the game more often than not.
Predicted Line Up (4-2-3-1): James Trafford, Connor Roberts, CJ Egan-Riley, Maxime Esteve, Bashir Humphreys, Josh Cullen, Josh Brownhill, Josh Laurent, Jeremy Sarmiento, Jaidon Anthony, Jay Rodriguez.
Scott Parker’s Burnley have also had a steady start to life in the Championship, like Sheffield United they have lost just twice and often look comfortable against most teams. Goals have not been flying in but their watertight defence combats that perfectly. But sitting a point off the automatic promotion spots there is still work to be done.
Josh Brownhill is a surprise top scorer in Lancashire this season, with eight goals and two assists. Often allowed to play in an advanced midfield role, unlike in previous years, Brownhill is one of the first names on the team sheet and is now one of the longer-serving players at the club, making him a deserving captain.
This is a very historic match-up, with the fixture being played 131 times dating back to 1890. It has also been very even, Sheffield United have 52 wins, Burnley have 47 and there have been 32 draws. Burnley have won the last three editions of this fixture, including scoring nine goals on aggregate against Sheffield United last season. Here are the last five fixtures:
As these sides are the top two in the league for clean sheets and least goals conceded, this match looks set to be poor in terms of goals. With both teams desperate not to lose and slip up in the promotion race, a stalemate seems the most likely outcome of this tie.
For this reason, our betting experts say neither team to score is the best value tip for this game. With odds of 7/1, there is potential that a bet of £10 could result in a payout of £84, totalling £74 profit. Equally under 2.5 goals has odds of 4/7, resulting in a £15.80 payout from a £10 bet, making £5.80 in profit.
