London is a city that has seen some of the best players and clubs in it. With examples of clubs such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, there has been a lot of quality through the years. However, it isn’t just the players that have played for those clubs that have been phenomenal. London has also produced and seen some of the greatest players from England born there. So that now brings up the question: if there were 2 teams, one made of legends who played in London vs legends born in London, what team would win?
The first thing you have to do is look at what both teams would look like. We need to look at the best players who spent their careers playing for a London club as well as those who were born in London. To make the comparisons fair, this match will be played at a neutral ground, being Wembley. Both teams will also be set up in a variation of 4-3-3.
This will be the team that sees the players who spent their careers playing in London.
This team is incredibly well balanced. Their defence has some of the greatest defenders the league has ever seen, with both Terry and Moore having some of the greatest readings of the game of all time. To add onto this, they have 2 of the best fullbacks at one-on-one defending and helping going forward. On top of this already impenetrable defence, there is the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets in Premier League history. This defence alone will cause issues for almost every attack in football history. However, that wasn’t enough, as Makelele has been added in front of that defence. One of the greatest holding midfielders the league has ever had and someone who will limit the number of attacks that the defence even has to see.

The main area where the London Signing’s team looks strongest is their midfield. Already spoken about Makelele. Someone who will be able to sit at the base of the midfield and control the defensive area; however, he can be supported. While Vieira’s main job in this team isn’t to defend, his ability to defend will help. Viera is there to add the physical factor to this midfield. Standing at 6’4”, his height will allow a lot of aerial dominance for this team and will help with controlling the middle. His physicality in challenges and keeping possession will also be a vital factor in progressing the ball. Then there is the attacking output of this area, Lampard. Won’t have to help defensively much with Vieira and Makelele so he can focus on what he does best. The top-scoring midfielder in Premier League history and Chelsea’s all-time top scorer, Lampard, will be free to move forward and cause issues for the defence.
Lampard going forward will only cause more issues with the attacking line this team has. Henry and Hazard will cause a lot of issues for any fullbacks. Their pace, direct running and dribbling will create so much danger for them going forward. Then with their striker, they will always have an option in the middle. Greaves is one of the greatest poachers of all time, a true number 9 and someone who will be in the box. With Hazard, Henry and Lampard providing chances, he will be given a lot of opportunities, something he doesn’t need lots of to score.

All around this team doesn’t just have elite talent. These players, while world-class by themselves, all complement each other and will allow other players to thrive. This team will take a lot of stopping.
As stated, this team will also be set up in a 4-3-3. This team is made from the best players who were born in the capital.
This team has some very strong core components. Like the Signings team, their defence is very strong. They have 3 of the same defenders, with Bobby Moore and John Terry bringing their masterful defensive reading and ability to the team. They also have Ashley Cole, who will be hoping to keep the wingers in check. They also have a very established goalkeeper behind Terry and Moore. The main issues come from one of their 3 currently active footballers. London hasn’t provided many of England’s elite fullbacks, with Reece James being the main one of note. While his ability is very impressive, he might be the man that lets the defence down.
The midfield is opposite to the signings team. While the signings team’s middle of the park is built on their strong defensive ability and physical attributes, the London-born team doesn’t have that. Lampard loses some of his value having to sit that bit deeper alongside Beckham. However, what they lose with that, they have gained in creativity.
Rice offers a lot in both his creativity and defensive ability. While his defensive strengths might not be strong enough for Lampard to get his normal attacking ability, his progressive attributes are. The main area where they have that creativity is Hoddle. Having Lampard deeper allows for Hoddle to work his magic in the middle. One of England’s greatest attacking midfielders and most technically gifted players, he will be their focal point moving the ball up the pitch. He will be trying to cause issues and create as much as possible for his forwards.

The forwards, however, will be able to create a lot themselves. With Beckham being put slightly more advanced than he normally plays, you get his crossing ability made more prevalent. He will be able to cause issues putting crosses in at any distance that he can, providing serves for the striker Harry Kane. One of England’s greatest-ever strikers and the country’s all-time top scorer.
Naturally, Kane will be the man that they look to get service to, to put away their chances and score for them; however, he can also create. He will most likely be looking for the other forward for those chances. Ian Wright, another one of England’s most elite forwards. He will be that second man that is scoring goals for them, causing issues for their defence. With Kane’s link-up play and creative ability, he will have plenty of chances.
Based on these teams and the players that will be involved, the outcome is clear. As much as the London Born team has a lot of very strong players and elite ability, they lack that balance in the middle. While Lampard, Rice and Hoddle are amazing players, their defence will likely need support, something that midfield won’t give much. The second issue comes with the lack of physicality in the middle; Makelele and Vieira will cause a lot of issues with their strength and power in the middle. While they have that creativity, the central area for the signing team is well adapted to stop the chances and creativity from happening.
Finally, Reece James will likely struggle when facing a player such as Henry on the wing, causing a defender to be likely to help him, allowing space for other forwards such as Hazard, Greaves and Lampard to find space and cause issues. Overall, the balance in the signings team through the middle and the pure power in attack will more than likely allow them to win this match.
