European Football Round-Up: Still All To Play For

As the season comes to a close, there’s still all to play for across European football.

From nail-biting relegation battles to top of the table clashes, we take a look at what went down during matchweek 36.

Serie A

The battle against relegation, race for UEFA Champions League football and fight for the Serie A title all took twists and turns during match week 36.

Empoli and Venezia have flirted with relegation for the majority of the season, finding themselves amongst the relegation places. However, with wins against Parma and Fiorentina respectively the fight to stay in the division took a massive turn with just two games remaining.

A 2-1 victory against Fiorentina, saw Venezia climb out of the relegation zone into 17th position with 32 points. The result also sees Fiorentina’s chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League come to an end.

Empoli’s 2-1 win at home to Parma means that Marco Giampaolo’s side moved to one point from safety.

Despite picking up a point against Verona, Lecce fell to 18th in the table due to results elsewhere.

Further up the table saw Milan take a huge step towards Champions League qualification having picked up a 3-1 victory against Bologna.

With Juventus, Lazio, Roma and Bologna dropping points, Milan find themselves four points away from 4th place.

Across the city and Inter managed to close the gap on league leaders Napoli to just one point with a 2-0 victory against Torino and Napoli failing to defeat Genoa.

For Manchester City, the failure to win sees their Champions League qualification hopes take a hit. Pep Guardiola’s side currently sit 4th in the table with 65 points - two points ahead of Aston Villa for a place in Europe’s elite competition next season.

Ollie Watkins cemented his name in the history books of Aston Villa as his effort against Bournemouth saw him become the clubs record goalscorer in the Premier League.

The 1-0 win against Bournemouth means Aston Villa go level on points with 5th placed Chelsea.

Newcastle United and Chelsea was the highlight fixture heading into the matchweek with both teams in the hunt for the Champions League.

Goals from Tonali and Guimaraes saw the Magpies cruise to an emphatic 2-0 victory, climbing to 3rd in the table - two points behind 2nd placed Arsenal.

Nottingham Forest secured European football for the first time in 30 years with a 2-2 draw to Leicester City. However, the actions which followed took the headlines as owner Evangelos Marinakis was seen berating Nuno Espírito Santo at full time, having fallen to 7th in the table despite sitting in the top four for most the campaign.

UEFA Europa League finalists Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United were unable to use midweeks momentum to their advantage as both sides suffered defeats at the hands of Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

Despite a 2-0 lead early into the fixture, Real Madrid were unable to fend off Barcelona’s efforts as Hansi Flick’s side found themselves 4-2 up heading into the half time break thanks to goals from Garcia, Yamal and a brace from Raphinia.

Kylian Mbappe would do all he could to keep Madrid in the contest, scoring a hat-trick but didn’t receive much help from his teammates.

The win means that Barcelona have all but won the La Liga title - sitting five points clear with three games to go.

Valencia’s turnaround under Carlos Corberan has been nothing short of remarkable. Having been appointed in December 2024, following a spell with English Championship side West Bromwich Albion, Valencia have gone from languishing towards the bottom of the table to sitting two points outside of the European qualification places.

Goals from Pepelu, Lopez and Duro saw Valencia pick up an impressive 3-0 victory against Getafe.

Valencia have won 11 of their 21 matches m since the arrival of Corberan at Mestella Stadium.
