FPL Gameweek 6 Wildcard: Five Players You Can't Afford to Ignore

Ah, the wildcard chip. It’s the Fantasy Football equivalent of ordering a kebab at 11pm on your way back from having a few beers with the lads: you know you probably shouldn’t, but it feels so good in the moment.

With Gameweek 6 coming up, managers are smashing the wildcard button. There are some good fixtures coming up to capitalize on, as well as injuries and suspensions to consider. If you’re going to progress with your wildcard this week - you want to make sure you get it right.

Let’s have a proper look into the five players you must include in your GW6 Wildcard squad. Think of them as non-negotiables for the rest of this season.

Enzo Fernandez

Let’s talk about Enzo. He will 100% be overlooked by many, but here’s the truth: in FPL he’s a real asset - and nobody’s noticing.

He’s not flashy, and he’s not scoring goals every week, but he is a wildcard gem. Here’s why:

  • Set pieces: Corners, free-kicks - his deliveries have been consistently dangerous.
  • Penalties: With Palmer looking likely to be missing the next few games, Enzo’s on penalties. Penalties are cheat codes; they turn ‘meh’ players into proper assets in FPL.
  • Good fixtures: Chelsea’s run looks decent. Brighton, Forest, Sunderland, and Wolves coming up.
  • Price: £6.7m is the sweet spot. He’s a real bargain. This gives you real opportunity to include more expensive assets in your team.

If you’re worried he won’t score enough, most steady midfielders like Enzo often tick along with 6-7 point returns per game, and those add up quickly. There’s an underrated midfielder who gets a load of points every year; last year it was Mbuemo, and this year it could be Enzo.

Erling Haaland

Let’s not waste time here. Haaland should be the first player you pick in your wildcard. If you’re wildcarding and don’t have him, close the app, uninstall FPL, and take up gardening or something instead.

I can feel you getting angry reading this: “He may be injured for the game against Burnley.” And I do get it. But, even if he is out against Burnley, he’s still a must-have for the rest of the season.

Here’s why:

  • He’s returned 46 points in five games.
  • Six goals already. He’s on track to break his own record. Again.
  • 75% goal involvement. If City score, he’s there.
  • xG of 5.2. Twice as high as the next-best striker.

Even Pep has admitted this season Haaland is “better than the treble year”. Crazy really.

The fixtures? Burnley are up next (if he plays) - a team currently holding the joint-worst record for expected goals conceded. He didn’t play midweek, which probably shows he’s been rested for the weekend. I think he’ll play.

Verdict: Get him in your wildcard. Captain him. Vice-captain him. Triple captain him. Tattoo him on your arm. Just get him in.

James Tarkowski

Flashy names, bright boots, headbands, gloves & short-sleeved shirts. Nah. Not Tarkowski. Old-school center half that will head and kick anything you throw at him. He’ll get you points.

Now, being honest, Everton aren’t exactly prime Barcelona 2009, but defensively, they’re solid. Tarkowski in particular is a DEFCON monster. He racks up blocks, clearances, and interceptions like they’re going out of fashion.

Why he’s a wildcard option:

  • Fixtures: next up West Ham. Should be straightforward. Palace and Spurs at Goodison also all have points potential.
  • Nailed starter: No rotation headaches. Plays every game.
  • DEFCON consistency: Even if Everton concede a goal, Tarkowski still grinds out a solid 2-4 points purely from his defensive work.

He won’t get your 15-point hauls every week, but he’ll quietly keep your defence ticking while freeing funds elsewhere.

Verdict: He’s not sexy, but he’s steady. And on a wildcard, that balance is important.

**Marcos Senesi **

Now we’re talking. Marcos Senesi is the king of DEFCON. You cannot ignore him.

Here’s the headline: no defender has produced more defensive contributions this season. He’s been reliable, hitting DEFCON points in every match he’s played in. That’s basically a 4-point return before you even consider clean sheets or bonus points.

Add in Bournemouth’s surprisingly solid start - with three clean sheets already - Senesi looks like the best budget defender in FPL. At 4.7m, he’s criminally underpriced.

Verdict: Essential. Get him in your team, leave him there, and watch the points roll in.

David Raya

Finally, the man between the sticks. Goalkeepers in FPL are usually a snoozefest - pick one, don’t look at it again, and wait for clean sheets. But David Raya makes things interesting.

Arsenal’s defense is top. They registered the most clean sheets last season (18), and they’re already topping the table for defensive stats this year (surprised they’re not 2nd). Raya sits at the top of the charts for goalkeeper stats:

  • 33 points so far.
  • Three clean sheets.
  • Six-point bonus.

Yes, 5.5m is steep for a keeper, but Raya is the cheapest “nailed on” Arsenal defensive option. You don’t have to worry about Arteta’s rotation roulette with his fullbacks.

Plus, Arsenal’s fixtures are a huge USP. Newcastle, West Ham, Fulham, Crystal Palace, and Brighton are all coming up.

Verdict: Worth the price. A long-term keeper who will probably be in your team for the rest of the season and will get you a lot of points along the way.

Final Thoughts

Wildcarding is fun; you need a lot of sensible picks, but also a lot of luck. You can look into stats all day, but then Tarkowski will score a random header and Haaland will blank against Burnley. That’s literally FPL in a nutshell.

But these five players give you a real safety net. Haaland will give you goals. Enzo will return most weeks. Tarkowski and Senesi will contribute massively to your DEFCON points. Raya will keep the ball out of his net.

My advice: lock them in, trust the process, and when Enzo scores a penalty in GW7, just shout Football Park out on your socials.

Good luck.
