As the transfer window finished yesterday, and every team closed their final deals, we can now look and see which sides won the window, and which ones flopped ... badly. Every team needed something different, and while some sides opted against making any moves. With that in mind, let's go over the Premier League winners and losers of the January transfer window.
It was a very quiet window for the richest club in England, which is somewhat surprising considering the inconsistent form and lowly 11th place where they find themselves. They have been ranked bottom, as they didn’t sign or sell anyone of note. Fringe players came back, and depth went on loan.
It is very much the same story for Manchester United. No one of note signed, with youngsters coming back from loan and heading back out on temporary deals. It could be argued that bringing in new faces would only complicate the job of Michael Carrick - sometimes, less is more. They didn’t sell anyone or sign anyone, so 19th is all they can place.
Getting on the board with our first move on the list, Brentford brought in a single signing this window, 18-year-old Kaye Furo from Club Brugge. While the young striker could turn out to be an elite talent, he is most certainly one for the future - this window hasn't really added to their squad depth.
One main signing for the Reds, and that was Jeremy Jacquet, poached from under the nose of Chelsea. While he is an excellent acquisition, spending 60 million up front with a further 12 million in add-ons is a lot for a young defender. The main reason for why this signing doesn’t push them up the list is the fact that they aren’t getting him now; instead, he will spend the rest of the season in France and join up in the summer.
Similarly to Liverpool, Leeds made just one main signing this window, and that was the loan of Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton, who had recently returned from a separate, unsuccessful loan at Chelsea. While he represents a cost-effective signing with Premier League experience, it wasn't enough to catapult them up this list. They also lost Jack Harrison on loan to Fiorentina, someone they could’ve done with keeping for his experience and cover for injured Dan James.
Arsenal had one area that they were looking at strengthening towards the very end of the window - a backup central midfielder. Mickel Merino was injured at the back end of January, so they put some feelers out to see what came back, although it was clear they were not desperate to fill the void. Other than that, they sold Oleksandr Zinchenko to Ajax. It was a quiet window for the Premier League leaders.
Chelsea went into this window looking for a defender and did, in fact, end up with two. However, neither of them was a new signing. Instead, we saw the return of Aaron Anselmino and Mamadou Sarr, the former of which went back out on loan to Strasbourg. That was it for the arrivals at Stamford Bridge. The main priority was clearing deadwood; Raheem Sterling left as a free agent, Axel Disasi left on loan, and a few other youngsters also sealed loan moves. This included Kendy Paez, and of course Aaron Anselmino.

The only major name that came in for Burnley was James Ward-Prowse. Other than bringing the 31-year-old to the club, the Clarets didn’t have much to shout about in the month of January, either on or off the field. However, that signing could work for them; his experience in the league could help a team that is struggling with confidence, and his deadball prowess and experience in relegation battles could prove to be an X factor in their bid for survival.
Like Burnley, Brighton only really made one signing. However, they get significant bonus points for this signing being club legend and Premier League quality Pascal Gross. Having had a successful stint in Germany with Borussia Dortmund, Gross has slotted back in like he never left, notching his first goal back against Everton last time out. Other than that, it was a quiet window for the Seagulls.
One main name came through the door for Everton, and that was a deadline day deal for Chelsea teenager Tyrique George on loan. While they do have an option to buy, it isn’t a deal that will turn their season on its head; however, his cover for the injured Grealish will be valuable. Elsewhere, they saw some young talent leave the club on loan and saw Harrison Armstrong join; it was an inactive window overall.
Forest saw 3 new names walk through the door, these being Stefan Ortega from Manchester City, Lorenzo Lucca on loan from Napoli, and Luca Netz from Borussia Mönchengladbach on Deadline Day. They are high-quality signings that could help them try and rescue their season. These moves underlined Forest's European ambitions - into the play-off rounds of the Europa League, they will be keen to go deep on the continent, with their domestic campaign virtually over already.
As Sunderland look to build for a future that looks destined to be in the Premier League, they have used this window to invest in some youth, including the signing of 22-year-old Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht for £15 million. He’s been enjoying a good season in Belgium, and the Black Cats will be hopeful that he can help them finish strong in the Premier League. Overall, a quiet window. Possibly waiting for the summer to truly invest.
It was a curious window for Villa, in which they saw two ex-players rejoin their club in Tammy Abraham and Douglas Luiz. Knowing the quality of both stars from their previous stints at the club, they will provide extra depth to the team so that they can keep fighting for those top five spots. Champions League football is the aim for next season, and the co-arrivals of Brian Madja and Alysson only bring further attacking firepower to the side. Aside from those moves, Unai Emery focused on loaning out some academy and young talent.

After selling their star player in Antoine Semenyo, the Cherries needed a big window to recover from such an important loss, and they did. Four signings came in, with the headline act being Brazilian wonderkid Rayan, who notched an assist against Wolves at the weekend. He is already showing the sort of promise that could see him become the next Semenyo, and while he might not be a here-and-now signing, it shows clear foresight and investment for the future. Alex Toth from Ferencvaros, Christos Mandas from Lazio, and Fraser Forster on a free transfer bring added depth. Overall, some solid investment after such a massive loss.
Fulham had a quiet window for a while, but when it was time, they moved quickly to acquire a big upgrade in their winger department. They sold Adama Traore to West Ham, and bought in Manchester City wonderkid Oscar Bobb for just over 30 million. This is a deal that has the potential to look like a bargain in the coming years. One of the stars of City's youth development programme, Bobb has been waiting for regular football to show the Premier League what he can do - Fulham pose as the perfect platform to get his career out of first gear. The move shows clear ambition to develop the squad and invest in the younger players.
Spurs bought in two key players this window. A new midfielder was desperately needed, so in came ex-Chelsea man Connor Gallagher for £35 million - a player with an excellent injury record, Gallagher is likely to be one of the few to avoid the ever-growing list of injuries in north London. They also signed 19-year-old talented fullback Souza for £13 million from Santos. These signings showed some actual direction in the market, especially with Gallagher, a rare trait when it comes to Spurs transfer business. While fans might have hoped for more in the winter window, these are great signings to help the squad.
A window that saw them sell Jorgen Strand Larsen for just under £50 million and bring in two good replacements for him, January can be considered a success story for Wolves. They bought in Championship striker Adam Armstrong, who has had a good goal-scoring season with 11 goals and 4 assists in 29 matches. They also welcomed former Man United starlet Angel Gomes to the club for the bargain fee of just £9 million. High-quality players who are more than good enough for the Premier League, these moves show that Wolves have not given up in their increasingly unlikely-looking fight for survival. A good window for Wolves.
Surprisingly, the big spenders of this window. After losing Marc Guehi for £20 and looking like they would lose star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, they had to mitigate the damage. They started off the month signing Brennan Johnson from Spurs for £35 million, a good signing in a position they needed more quality in. They also added Jorgen Strand Larsen, as they expected him to replace Mateta. #
However, with Mateta's deadline day deal to AC Milan now off, it will be interesting to see who is given the spot of starting striker. While the Norwegian is having an off season, he showed his quality last campaign - it's just a matter of rediscovering his confidence. Evan Guessand also arrived on loan from Villa, but the Eagles failed to find a defensive replacement for the departing Guehi. However, overall, a strong window.
A club that is desperately fighting for survival in the Premier League, and this window showed it. £25 million Valentin Castellanos and £22 million Pablo have started very well for the Hammers, already boosting hope ahead of the run-in, while the aforementioned arrival of Adama Traore adds pace and physicality to their right flank. They also ended the window with an addition to their defence, with Axel Disasi joining on loan from London rivals Chelsea. These signings highlight the Hammers' desire to stay up.

Was there going to be another answer than this? City had to have a strong window; they are looking to track down Arsenal at the top of the league, and it was clear they needed squad depth to match their rivals. They have added the best winger in the league this season, £62.5 million Semenyo, to their squad and also brought in arguably England's best defender in Marc Guehi for a bargain £20 million.
These signings just underline the pull that City and Guardiola have despite being in the midst of a trophy drought. Their new men have already had an effect on the side, and will prove vital as the title race hots up.
