A Star is Born - 16-Year-Old Antonio Arena scores on AS Roma Debut

Meet Roma's new 16-year-old Wonderkid

The age for players to break through seems to be getting younger and younger, with players making their debuts at all ages. We've seen an unbelievable number of teenagers making their debut in the last few seasons. However, not many take the world by storm, scoring on their debut on the biggest stage. The likes of Marcus Rashford in 2016, scoring twice, and recently Rio Ngumoha, who scored a 96th-minute goal away at Newcastle at the age of just 16.

Serie A is known for bringing through a great pool of players. Italian giants Roma are just one of many teams that have produced some outstanding players over the years. Daniel De Rossi, Alessandro Florenzi and the one-club man himself, Francesco Totti. Have they found their next big star?

On Tuesday night, a star was born as Roma welcomed Torino to the Stadio Olimpico in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia. Within a minute of coming on the pitch, Antonio Arena announced himself to the Rome crowd, scoring on his debut with his first touch to level the game. Is he Roma's new wonderkid?

Who is Antonio Arena?

Antonio Arena, at just the age of 16, wrote his name in Roma history. He was born in Sydney, Australia, in 2009 and came through the youth academies of M&U Football Academy and Western Sydney Wanderers, before moving to Pescara in 2022 to finish his development. In 2025, just five days after his 16th birthday, he signed his first professional contract for Pescara, signing until 2028.

He made his senior and professional debut with Italian third division side Pescara in a 4–1 win over Lucchese, where he scored their fourth goal. At just 16 years and 25 days old, he became the first 2009-born player to score in Italy, and also the youngest ever goalscorer for Pescara, beating the record of Italian legend Marco Verratti. He made five appearances for them, scoring once and helping them secure promotion to Serie B through the playoffs.

In 2024, he made his debut for the Australian under-16 side in a friendly 4-3 win over Switzerland. The following year, he was called up to represent the Italian under-16 team in a series of international friendlies. Arena has dual citizenship and will have both countries desperate for his registration if he continues this upward trajectory.

In the summer of 2025, he made his big move to AS Roma. Arena has had to be patient, waiting over six months for his debut. He took his chance, scoring with his first touch in a Roma shirt, keeping their Coppa Italia dreams alive. This goal took the footballing world by storm, with millions of people knowing the name, Antonio Arena. Unfortunately his goal was not enough to see Roma through to the next round. A 90th-minute winner from Emirhan Ilkhan stole the show, putting out Roma's young new flame.

Where have we seen this before?

A young Sydney-born star taking the Serie A by storm is nothing new. Back in 2021, Cristian Volpato made his first appearance in the Serie A against Inter Milan, where he played for less than a minute.

But why do we recognise this story? What makes it so similar to Antonio Arena? Well, Volpato was born in Sydney, Australia, and came through the ranks at the Western Sydney Wanderers academy, where he was a prolific goalscorer. Identical to Arena, he soon earned a trial in the AS Roma Youth Sector. After a few months in Rome, he was able to demonstrate his attacking abilities, leading to a three-year contract with the club. There was a lot of noise surrounding him as he took Totti's famous number 10 shirt for their academy.

A year later, Volpato signed his first professional contract with Roma, a new three-year deal tying him to the club until 2024. He was firing in the academy ranks before making his debut for the club in 2021. Just a few months later, in just his second appearance, he scored in a 2-2 draw with Hellas Verona in February 2022. He went on to play 14 times for Roma before moving to Serie A side Sassuolo in the summer of 2023.

Roma fans will be hoping Arena's story is a little different from Volpato's, wanting to see him succeed in that famous Roma strip. Keep an eye on his career; he's definitely one to watch.
