Wonderkids, in many senses, make the world go round in football.
There have been countless times, as the years go by, that a new young superstar makes their first few forays forward into the senior footballing world and leaves people their age and above scratching their heads over what it was they were up to when they were at that age.
Of course, not all of them reach superstar status, but the early prospects of them doing so still leaves plenty to be excited about every single time.
Not all footballers step into the top levels of the game in their earliest career stages; see Jamie Vardy for the most mainstream example, but the youth of today are being pushed forward into the limelight earlier and earlier.
With that, we see more and more young players with the world at their feet with each passing season, to a level of quantity that means not all of them get the early pressures of a 'wonderkid' tag right from the very outset.
With that in mind, here are some of the best young players in world football today, that you may not have heard anything about just yet.
🇳🇱 Kees Smit

- AZ Alkmaar
- 19 y/o
- right footed CM/AM
+ difference maker in the final third, strong ball carrier, quality of "high impact" passes is excellent; oop volume is the only glaring weakness, but that's role induced... I think he's going to be worth the hype pic.twitter.com/tEe7YWYnld
If you haven't heard about this dynamic Dutchman pulling the midfield strings for AZ yet, then I wouldn't worry - you're going to know about him very soon.
The 19-year-old central midfielder has racked up 11 appearances in the Eredivisie this season, scoring twice and laying on a further two assists before breaking into his 20s.
He has been a starring figure in the youthful Eerste Divisie since he was just 16 years old and made his first-team debut in the 23/24 season. Since then, he has amassed a total of 50 first-team appearances and has carried the air of a future great in almost every match.
He's noted for his silky-smooth control in possession and lung-busting tenacity in the AZ engine room, as well as being a regular supplier of high-quality passes and attacking contributions. Out of possession, his numbers falter slightly, but that more comes as a result of his instalment as a more attacking figure in the Dutch side.
He has been making waves in the earliest years of his senior career, and there is everything there to suggest that Kees Smit will be worth the hype that will come his way sooner rather than later. Newcastle United, Manchester United and Barcelona are just a few of the clubs after him these days, so keep an eye out for his mainstream bow.

One for Manchester United fans to savour, re-introducing Willy Kambwala into the mainstream fold.
The young French central defender made 10 appearances over the Premier League and FA Cup for the Red Devils in the 23/24 campaign under Erik ten Hag, helping United navigate their way through an injury crisis at the time. Fans may not have been too quick to pin him down as a true wonderkid, as his being thrown into the deep end didn't truly allow him to show his best performances at Old Trafford.
He was let go by the Red Devils at the end of that season to La Liga side Villarreal, where he made a proper breakthrough as a senior top-level player. He broke into the first team with the Yellow Submarine over the turn of the new year in the 24/25 campaign, and cut a strong figure with his defensive IQ and physical nous.
Unfortunately, he hasn't made a showing yet this season, as he nurses an injury which has left him unavailable so far over the course of this season, but when he comes back there should be ample opportunity for the Frenchman to make further inroads as one of Europe's most understated young footballers.

Over at Como, Premier League legend Cesc Fabregas is creating a small dynasty.
The club currently sit very prettily in 7th position in the Serie A table, a far cry away from years before when they suffered a 21-year absence from Italy's top flight. Fabregas, initially a minority shareholder and then a caretaker manager, has taken on the reins full-time and is yet to look back, prioritising a youthful outlook with stars of the future.
A lot of the noise in the wider footballing world emanates over the head of one Nico Paz, who is a dead cert to become a Real Madrid player at the end of the season, but just as much acclaim should be afforded to Diao - Como's 20-year-old Senegalese right winger.
Standing unorthodoxly tall for a winger at 6'1", Diao possesses an innate blend of grace and power that has seen him make a masterful start to his senior top-flight career, which has taken him to Italy after breaking through in La Liga with Real Betis. He linked up with Fabregas' side in the January window of 2025 and flew out of the blocks with 8 goals in his first 15 Serie A games.
He has a deep box of tricks and a technical nous that leaves him in a superb standing as one of the wingers to watch in 2025. He hasn't been at Como long, and Paz takes the majority of the headlines away from him, but don't be surprised to see Diao standing just as proudly as his Argentine partner in the future.

Football Manager players know their stuff when it comes to Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The wiry 18-year-old has been on the books with Ligue 1 side LOSC Lille since he was just 14 years old and made his senior football debut with them in 2023 just 3 days after he turned 16. Since then? 70 career appearances and a stupifying highlight reel left in his wake.
This boy possesses grace and quality in possession that puts players a decade older than him to shame. He has a wonderful IQ and an ability to (apparently) slow down time itself as he dances away from challenges and supplies forward-first passes to his grateful teammates. You would be forgiven for thinking Bouaddi had been playing senior top-flight football for years and years prior, but he's still a new face on the block that the wider world of fans haven't caught onto quite as quickly as they have for your Bellingham's and Yamal's.
Bouaddi is subject to a 12-club battle for his services in the not-so-distant future, with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, PSG and Bayern Munich all keen to bring him aboard. No matter where it is he ends up plying his trade one day, we have every confidence that he will succeed.
Finally got round to watching Etta Eyong (22). Stood out straight away the want to get in behind the centre back with a curve then run beyond pic.twitter.com/6YVeQbqscD

A player who has gone miles under the radar this season is Cameroon and Levante forward Etta Eyong.
The 22-year-old has been well in the goals since his summer move across La Liga which took him from Villareal - where he was a team-mate of Willy Kambwala's - to Levante, where he has since struck 6 goals and laid on a further 3 assists in 12 league appearances. Eyong has a unique blend of raw physical attributes with mental fortitude, which has seen him breach defensive lines with clever movement and a telekinetic connection with his Levante team-mates.
He's something of a volume shooter, having missed 6 big chances this season whilst averaging over 2 shots per game, but this perhaps only details the controlled chaos Eyong brings to each performance. Bigger clubs are starting to take notice, so soon after his Levante switch in the summer, with the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona and Arsenal having scouted him out for a potential move.
The big-club hype is well-warranted with Etta Eyong, and whilst he is impressing at a top-flight level already it feels only a matter of time before he continues to do so with a club of bigger stature as his young career continues to take shape.
Luca Williams-Barnett vs Haiti U17

If you don't know, get to know.
Though we are awaiting his Premier League debut with Tottenham, Luca Williams-Barnett is a player that has the lilywhite portion of North London teeming with excitement over the player potentially in their hands at the moment.
Aged 18 and most comfortable operating in the 10, Williams-Barnett is a human highlight reel with his positional awareness and clever manipulation of space. He has made his first showing in the senior game, coming on as a late substitute for Tottenham this season in an EFL Cup win over Doncaster Rovers, and Tottenham fans quite rightly cannot wait to see what more there is to come.
Perhaps a loan move may be the next course of events for this young prodigy – Notts County appear to do well with Tottenham youngsters - but it can be certain that Luca Williams-Barnett's time is only around the corner.
