Peterborough Are In Lift Off - How This Manager Went From The Airport To Beating League One's Best

Flying Through The League

Peterborough have just won their fourth game on the bounce in all competitions since Luke Williams took charge at the end of October. Posh fans have been having a torrid time of it lately as they sat in the relegation zone after a dismal start to the season. However, new boss Luke Williams seems to have steadied the ship in such a short space of time, with two back-to-back league wins and eight goals between them both. They are flying.

From The Airport To The EFL

Luke Williams' story becomes that more fascinating as prior to his Peterborough appointment, he was working at Bristol Airport as a customer care assistant since May 2025. Prior to this, Williams was sacked by Swansea City in February 2025 after losing seven in a row.

It isn't often you see an EFL manager take themselves out of their comfort zone - and pay zone - to work in somewhere like an airport. Williams told BBC Sport: "I am trying to push myself to do something completely different." You have to give him credit.

The new role at the airport didn't last long for Williams, as Peterborough's board thought that his new knowledge of aeroplanes would be their saviour. So far, that has proved a stable decision.

A Positive Start

Last night's emphatic 3-0 win over second in League One Stockport County showed everyone watching what Peterborough have been missing. Confidence. The attacking output on display was brilliant to watch whether Peterborough were controlling the game or counter-attacking.

21-year-old winger Kyrell Lisbie looked like producing something special throughout the night and netted a goal through his efforts. Much of Peterborough's attacking spark left when Kwame Poku joined Queens Park Rangers in the summer. However, Williams is already getting the best out of his players, who looked to have had a lack of confidence before his appointment.

What was also interesting to see last night was the goal scorers for Peterborough. Including Kyrell Lisbie (a winger), two midfielders scored as well. That means seven different players have scored for Williams in over four games. Having each of your 11 as a goal threat can only be a positive thing for Williams and shows a more dynamic approach not having to rely on one goal scorer. It also creates somewhat of a selection headache as Peterborough have got quality all over the pitch when they are full of confidence.

Williams' style has been a breath of fresh air for Posh fans. Darren Ferguson did last a while, but his philosophy and scrappy goals are no longer. Now Peterborough are playing high-intensity attacking football which suits their players from the ground up. To win games in the EFL, teams have to be confident going forward. Relying on a good defence alone is a recipe for relegation.

What Worked Will Work Again

Luke Williams attacking approach isn't something that has come out of the blue, it is a part of his identity.

If you are a big Wrexham follower, you might remember the Notts County side that competed with them in the 2022-23 season and eventually got promoted that season through the play offs. That was Luke Williams' side, an absolute offensive demon. His side that season achieved 107 points but were still unable to claim the National League title. They broke numerous records by surpassing previous divisional records for points, wins and goals scored. He had Notts County playing outstanding attacking football and dominating near enough every game, it was just a shame a certain Welsh side were that bit better. The beginning of the Ryan Reynold's era or the beginning of the Luke Williams era. Williams sounds better.

After his successful spell at Notts County, Williams joined Welsh side Swansea City in a bid to get them out of the fabled Championship. His first half-a-season was relatively successful as he guided Swansea to a steady 14th place and comfortably avoided relegation. However, after just over a year in charge, Williams was sacked after losing seven Championship games in nine matches. His attacking tactics weren't best displayed at Swansea but the Championship is unforgiving at the best of times.

What's Next

Peterborough fans are delighted that their new boss has had a positive start in his new life in League One. His side stills sit in the relegation zone by one point but do have a game in hand on Exeter City who sit in 20th place. The future is bright for the Posh Army, especially if Williams can build on his perfect form so far and attacking style of play. We are still so early into the season and promotion is never off the cards. Stranger things have happened.
