Real Betis vs Chelsea: Match Preview – Who Will Win The Conference League Final?

This is the last chance both clubs have to win silverware this season. Chelsea are looking to add a trophy to what has already been a successful season under Enzo Maresca. Whereas Real Betis are seeking to win their first ever European trophy.

League Form and Results

Chelsea

After missing out on Champions League football last season, Chelsea have put that right this year with a 4th place finish in the Premier League. The Blues started their domestic campaign with only two defeats in their first 10 games, which were delivered by Manchester City and Liverpool respectively.

Recent results for Maresca’s men should give fans belief that their side can lift the trophy heading into the match. With four wins in their last five leagues games, three of those wins including clean sheets, the Blues will feel that the momentum and form is on their side.

Real Betis

With Real Betis ending the season in 6th place, they have already secured their spot in the Europa League next season regardless of the result against Chelsea. However the form of Los Verdiblancos at the start of the La Liga campaign was very average. With only four wins in their first 10 games, it seemed like Manuel Pellegrini’s side were going to struggle this season.

That was until Antony joined the club on loan in January from Manchester United, and since then has recorded 14 G/A in all competitions. The Brazilian winger has resurrected his career at the Spanish side, and in turn helped Real Betis enjoy a run of nine games unbeaten during the season.

Recent domestic form shows that the Spanish outfit have also only lost one of their last five matches, however three of the five games have been score draws. The lack of clean sheets in recent encounters will be something Chelsea will look to exploit on Wednesday night.

What Do The Stats Say?

Chelsea

Chelsea have impressed both offensively and defensively in the Premier League this season. The Blues have scored 64 goals in 38 leagues games, which is an average of 1.68 goals per game. Compared to the rest of the league, the Blues sit joint sixth for the most goals scored. This coupled with Real Betis struggling to keep clean sheets suggests that Chelsea will fancy themselves to put a few past the Betis keeper.

Unlike Los Verdiblancos Maresca’s side have an outstanding defensive record in the league with only 43 goals conceded, an average of 1.13 goals conceded per game. That’s the third best defensive record in the league, showcasing Chelsea’s effectiveness at both ends of the pitch. The London based club also have a good away record, winning 42% of league games on the road. It gets harder and harder to look past a Chelsea win on Wednesday, however Real Betis do have reasons to remain hopeful.

Real Betis

Pellegrini’s outfit have proved they can consistently score goals this season, even in games they go on to lose. That is reflected in their 57 league goals scored, which is an average of 1.50 goals per game in La Liga this campaign, ranking 6th in the league for goals scored. Despite having a lower average than Chelsea, Betis have proved they can score and get results against the best teams in the division.

In both league matchups versus Barcelona Los Verdiblancos have drawn twice, scoring three goals across the two games. They have also beaten Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid once this season which is no mean feat, proving they can turn up in the big games.

However as I briefly touched upon before, the Seville based side have a poor defensive record. They have conceded 50 goals in the league, with 58% of those coming away from home. That averages out to 1.32 goals conceded per game, which again is a higher average than Chelsea. Betis have a 36%-win rate away from home, which is only a difference of turning one draw into a win. Although on paper Chelsea hold the advantage, it goes back to that old saying. Football is played on grass, not paper.

Predicted Lineups and Players To Watch

Chelsea Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; James, Adarabioyo, Colwill, Cucurella; Fernandez, Caicedo; Madueke, Palmer, Sancho; Jackson

There are several different ways Maresca could lineup his team on Wednesday night. Does he stick to the side that beat Nottingham Forest last weekend or does he give starts to players who have played an instrumental role in getting to the Conference League final? However what does seem certain is that Nicholas Jackson will return to the starting XI after missing out in the Premier League due to suspension.

Real Betis Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Adrian; Sabaly, Barta, Natan, Rodriguez; Cardoso, Fornals; Antony, Isco, Ezzalzouli; Bakambu

Pellegrini has far more injury concerns to deal with compared to Maresca. Fran Vietes, Giovani Lo Celso, Johnny Cardoso and Youssouf Sabaly are all doubts due to injury. It means the former Manchester City manager will have some key decisions to make before the final. However their two most prolific players in Antony and Isco are fit and available to start.

Where To Watch?

The Conference League Final between Real Betis and Chelsea takes place on Wednesday 28th May at Stadion Miejski, Wroclaw, Poland and kicks off at 8pm UK time. The game will be available to watch on TNT Sports and on Discovery + in the UK.

Real Betis vs Chelsea Prediction

Even though Chelsea are favourites to win this game, it has been a season for the underdogs so far. From Crystal Palace winning their first major trophy when they lifted the FA Cup, to Newcastle United ending their 56-year wait for a trophy when they won the Carabao Cup, there have been multiple occasions where the underdog has gone on to win a trophy in Europe this season. Does that mean Real Betis will join the illustrious list on Wednesday? I’m not so sure, which is why I’m predicting a Chelsea win and for the Blues to lift their first major trophy since 2021.

My prediction: Real Betis 1-3 Chelsea
