The Championship Club Quietly Becoming the Most In-Form Team in the League

The Championship has thrown all kinds of twists and turns at us so far this season. We have the likes of Stoke City, Millwall and Charlton all contesting for promotion, whilst some of the league’s favourites in Sheffield United and Southampton grapple down at the bottom.

However, there is a team that haven't necessarily positioned themselves at either end just yet, but have recently excited some of the best form the division has seen in the last few weeks.

That team is Derby County - with four wins on the spin in an attempt to mount up the table.

Monumental Form

The Rams couldn’t have really got off to a poorer start in the Championship this season. It took them five games and over a month to register their first victory and even after that, the next one didn't arrive until almost six weeks later.

Overall, they claimed just one win and eight points from their opening 10 games in the second tier. It looked as if they were staring down the barrel of another relegation-battling season.

Fast-forward just two weeks, John Eustace’s men have climbed up to 11th in the table, after winning all of their last four matches.

The Rams have managed to secure three points against each of Norwich City, QPR, Sheffield United and Hull City. Disregarding the latter team, none of these sides are top-end teams; however, Derby have managed to succeed in style, earning two clean sheets along the way.

The signing of Carlton Morris from Luton Town in the summer has proven crucial to this rise up the table. From Derby’s last four games, the striker has managed to add five goals to his season tally - which brings it up to nine in total.

Three of these goals came in a 3-1 win against Sheffield United last Saturday, as County made a mockery of the 22nd-placed side in their own backyard.

Can They Keep This Form Going?

The Rams are more than capable of keeping this form up. The fixtures don't necessarily get much more difficult for them, as their next three games consist of Blackburn, Watford and Swansea.

All three of those teams currently sit below Derby in the league table and should be great chances for three points.. Although as we know, the Championship certainly doesn't work that way and upsets are caused left, right and centre each week.

However, it is very important that the Rams do exceed in these next three, considering their fixtures after that are Middlesbrough, Leicester and Millwall, who are very strong competitors.

Both Millwall and Middlesbrough currently occupy a playoff place, with the latter chasing down the top two in third. Whereas Leicester were competing near the top, but having not won a game in their last five, they have dropped down to 13th.

Either way, in the form Derby are in, you’d expect them to pick up a handful of points in their approaching fixtures.

How Far Can The Rams Go?

At this point in time, playoffs is certainly not an outlandish prediction for the Midlands outfit. They sit just three points outside the top six in what is an extremely competitive top-half of the table.

What is helping the Rams out is that many teams around them have dropped points as of late, such as Hull, Bristol City, Millwall, Watford Leicester and Wrexham.

Last term, Eustace’s side finished the campaign 19th in the Championship, staying up by a tight one-point margin. Therefore, any improvement from that is extremely good progress.

However, with the squad they have now got, Derby are more than capable of at least securing a playoff position. The likes of Morris, Weimann, Agyemang, Zetterström, Clarke and Adams are players who have not only got the experience, but the prowess to take County forward.
