Three Months In… and Still Unbeaten: How?

Only a select few have made it this far into the season without losing a single game. To be precise, only three teams have actually managed it in the 92, and they are all from one of the top two leagues who have played less games than the lower two.

However, it is still a remarkable achievement, especially considering the majority of teams on this list aren’t even occupying top spot in their respective league.

Whilst just three teams from England’s top four divisions remain unbeaten, we are also going to take a step down to non-League, where the real pool of invincible teams lies. However, we’ll get into that shortly. For now, here is the list from top to bottom…

Crystal Palace - Premier League

There is only one team in the Premier League to have avoided losing a single game from their opening six fixtures. Is it reigning champions Liverpool? Powerhouses Arsenal? Or even Pep Guardiola’s exuberant Manchester City?

No, it is last season’s 12th-place finishers Crystal Palace - a team who have finished between 10th and 14th in the top flight for the last nine consecutive campaigns.

However, the Eagles have started this one superbly. Three wins and three draws from six games, Oliver Glasner’s men have clearly grown in confidence and swagger from their FA Cup trophy win of last term.

Palace have managed to defeat Liverpool, West Ham and Aston Villa, whilst picking up a point each against Chelsea, Sunderland and Nottingham Forest. This puts them third in the Premier League table on 12 points, as they sit three points adrift from Liverpool in top spot.

The Eagles have some certainly winnable fixtures approaching too, with Everton, Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton and Wolves all next up - Arsenal provides the only anomaly three matches from now.

Middlesborough - EFL Championship

Middlesbrough are sailing a promotion ship, as their exceptional form keeps refusing to end. Rob Edwards arrived on Teesside in the summer and has automatically transformed Boro into the league’s front-runners after eight games.

The Northeast outfit currently occupies the summit of the Championship, having not lost a single game so far this season. They have managed to win five and draw the other three, putting them on 18 points already.

Boro have beaten West Brom, Sheffield United, Norwich, Millwall and Swansea, whilst drawing to all three of Stoke, Southampton and Preston. Ironically, their only defeat of the season came in the EFL Cup, as as they found themselves on the end of a shocking 4-0 demolition at home by League One outfit Doncaster Rovers.

Two of those draws have actually come in Middlesbrough’s last two games, as they haven’t sought a win in over two weeks. However, as long as Edwards’ side continue to pick up points, that is all you can ask for.

The fixtures do get trickier for Boro. They prepare to face the likes of Wrexham, Ipswich, Watford and Leicester over the next month, and whilst those teams listed aren’t exactly playing out of their skin at the moment, there are still some fantastic squads amongst them.

Furthermore, there is another certain unbeaten outfit on their tail…

Coventry City - EFL Championship

Wow, just how entertaining are Coventry City? The Sky Blues may not have reached the impeccable points tally of Middlesbrough so far this term, but taking one look at the number of goals they’ve scored, we know which team we’d prefer to watch.

Coventry have so far succeeded in keeping pace with Rob Edwards’s Middlesbrough, as the West Midlands outfit remain within just a two-point gap of the league leaders. This all comes down to Coventry having drawn one more game from the opening eight.

The Sky Blues have picked up four wins this campaign, against Derby, QPR, Birmingham and Millwall. However, they have matched that tally with draws against Hull, Oxford, Norwich and Leicester.

There is no doubt Coventry could find top spot soon; whilst Middlesbrough have drawn their last two games, Frank Lampard’s men have won both, clawing ever closer to first position.

Coventry are also the top goal-scorers in the league by an absolute landslide. They have already scored 22 goals this term, which averages nearly three goals a game and is nine goals greater than the next highest team. Meanwhile, the Sky Blues have only conceded seven, giving them an exceptional goal difference.

Similarly to Middlesbrough, Coventry have each of Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth, Watford and Wrexham from their next five games in the Championship. But fortunately, they have evaded some of the tough fixtures the current leaders have lying ahead.

Forest Green Rovers - National League

Whilst neither League One nor League Two occupy any invincible teams, lets dive into the National League, where we can find two of them.

Forest Green are the first, which also describes their league position too, as Robbie Savage’s men sit two points clear at the top of the table.

We are 13 games in, and the Green still haven’t lost a game. They have won eight in total and drawn the other five, bringing their points total to 29 at this stage of the season.

Rovers have registered victories against Yeovil, Sutton, Halifax, Eastleigh, Morecambe, Hartlepool, Woking and Altrincham, although they have dropped points against Boston, York, Scunthorpe and Braintree. Second-placed Rochdale also have two games in hand over them, which could make these draws costly.

Speaking of Rochdale, guess who Forest Green’s next fixture is against. This Saturday will set up a stellar affair for the top two sides, as Rovers’ spot on the summit could be put in jeopardy.

Other than Rochdale, Forest Green also have to play Carlisle, Boreham Wood and Tamworth next up, which are all incredibly difficult matchups against playoff-positioned teams.

Scunthorpe United - National League

It has been a start full of elation for Scunthorpe, as they excite an unbeaten run of 11 games, despite being in the sixth tier last term.

Their National League North promotion finally granted a move back to national football and the Iron are grasping that opportunity with both hands. They are currently fourth in the league, with two games in hand and look phenomenal.

They have won seven of their 11 games, against Tamworth, Woking, Sutton, Truro, Southend, Wealdstone and York. However, they have drawn the other four against Boreham Wood, Forest Green, Brackley and Halifax.

This puts the Iron on 25 points for the campaign, only four points adrift of top spot and in a comfortable six point surplus in the playoff zone.

However, they also have a tricky fixture in their next match, as they host third place Carlisle on Saturday. But after that, the fixtures do get more promising.
