Who are the earliest Premier League champions in history?

Sitting 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, Liverpool look poised to win their 20th English League title. The Reds need 16 points from the remaining 27 available to secure the title.

With only nine games remaining, Arne Slot’s side have the opportunity to make history as one of the earliest Premier League title winners in history.

In this piece we take a look at the six teams crowned champions at the earliest possibility.

Liverpool 2019/20

Liverpool currently hold the record for earliest Premier League title wins with seven games to go in 2019/20. The Reds sealed the title after Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Jurgen Klopp’s side finished the campaign with 32 wins from a possible 38 and a points tally of 99 - 18 points clear of second placed Manchester City.

Liverpool were also a singular point from matching the best ever points tally in league history, set by Manchester City in 2017/18 (100).

Manchester City 2017/18

The Centurions come in second place, having secured the title with five games remaining in the 2017/18 season. Pep Guardiola’s side were crowned champions when West Bromwich Albion defeated Manchester United in a 1-0 upset at Old Trafford.

City would set multiple records over the season securing the largest margin between first and second with 19 points, the most goals by a side in a single campaign (106) and the highest number of wins in a English top-flight season (32) - Liverpool would match this record the following season.

Manchester United 2000/1

Manchester United are the only other team to win the Premier League title with five games remaining. A 4-2 win against Coventry City put United in the driver's seat before Middlesbrough defeated second placed Arsenal to confirm the championship.

Having recorded a points tally of 80 points, Manchester United became the first team to win the league with that number. Only three sides had won the title with fewer points.

At the time of Manchester United’s victory it was the earliest title win in league history.

Manchester United 1999/00

Manchester United once again appear on this list as they managed to win the title with four games to spare during the 1999/00 campaign.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side managed to get over the line with an emphatic 3-1 win against Southampton.

Manchester United would go on to win their final four games bringing their season to real to 91 points, finishing 18 points clear of second placed Arsenal. A record which stood until Manchester City eclipsed it in 2017/18.

Arsenal 2003/04

The 2003/04 season is still remembered as one of the most iconic Premier League seasons, thanks to Arsenal’s invincible campaign. The Gunners clinched the title away to rivals Tottenham Hotspur at White Heart Lane with a 2-2 draw.

Despite not winning the tie, results elsewhere meant Arsenal were able to begin their celebrations in enemy territory.

Arsene Wenger’s side would finish the campaign undefeated, winning 26 games and drawing 12.

Manchester United 2012/13

Manchester United make their third and final appearance on the list as Sir Alex Ferguson would once again lead the Red Devils to the title at an early stage.

A 3-0 win at home against Aston Villa was enough for United to secure the title in Ferguson’s last season in management. Second placed Manchester City would suffer a defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the day.

Manchester United’s win meant that they had achieved their goal with four games left to play.
