Which cheap signings have performed the best since 2020?
Clubs across the world are always looking for bargain buys. So we thought we'd put together a list of the most valuable signings since 2020.
Thiago Silva - free transfer
Chelsea managed to sign Silva from PSG in 2020 in the summer of 2020. Soon after his arrival, along came Thomas Tuchel taking charge following the sacking of Frank Lampard.
That very season, Chelsea won their second ever UEFA Champions League title, as Silva and Tuchel achieved what they failed to do at former club PSG.
Siva, despite now being 39 years old, is still a crucial part of Chelsea's defence. Considering he was brought into the side for nothing, and the amount they've spent in recent years on transfers, Thiago Silva is first on this list for a reason.

Granit Xhaka - £12,700,000
Many assumed that when Xhaka left Arsenal in the summer of 2023, his time challenging for trophies was over. However, this season he's arguably been the best player in the German top-flight, winning Bayer Leverkusen's first ever league title in the process.
For Arsenal fans, Xhaka perhaps left Arsenal too early. But for Leverkusen fans, they're probably wondering how they managed to sign such a quality player for barely anything.
The next time Arsenal are offloading a player, Bayern Munich should take note.

Gabriel Magalhães - £22,300,000
As our first player on the list to actually cost anything, Gabriel arrived at Arsenal from French side Lille in September of 2020.
Gabriel has kept his place at left-centre back ever since. And perhaps one of the best defenders in the Premier League, alongside his partner in crime, William Saliba.
Considering how much Virgil Van Dijk, Ruben Dias and even Harry Maguire cost, if Arsenal are able to win the Premier League this season, Gabriel is an absolute steal.

Marcus Thuram - free transfer
Thuram has been sensational for Inter Milan this season. He's just won them the Italian league, whilst scoring 14 and assisting 12 in all competitions in 2023/24.
The Frenchman, and son to football legend Lilian Thuram, is arguably the best signing on this list right now. He arrived from Germany's Borussia Monchengladbach last summer, and has been pivotal ever since.
At still only 26 years old, Premier League sides should keep an eye on this gem.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia - £11,400,000
Many fans have accused Kvaratskhelia of dropping off this season. But at the same time, they forget the lad is only 23. Meanwhile, he's still contributed 18 goals for Napoli this season, after winning their first league title in decades last year.
Kvaratskhelia has now been linked with Manchester United, as they look to undo their mess caused by signing fellow winger Antony.

Luis Suarez - £7,700,000
Barcelona are now famous for the bad business they do time and time again. And Suarez is a prime example of that.
The striker was shipped out the door at the end of the 2020/21 season for a very cheap price. Straight across to rivals Atletico Madrid.
Now that wouldn't have been a problem, if Atletico didn't go and win La Liga the following season. As Saurez scored 21 league goals.
A disaster for Barcelona. A masterclass from Atletico Madrid.
🔙 Back in 2020, Barcelona decided they didn't need Luis Suárez anymore, so they sold him to Atlético Madrid for just £6.5M. Ronald Koeman even broke the news to him over the phone.
