Who Are The Top Failed Wonderkids Of All Time?

As the sport of football has progressed into the 21st century, more and more teenage prodigies have been bursting onto the scene. This has brought about the term 'wonderkid', which is given to particular young players who show large amounts of promise.

However, certain players in the past who have been coined 'wonderkids' have been exposed to immense pressure which can limit their potential in particular ways.

In this article, we will be looking at the players who have been dubbed as wonderkids but failed to fulfil their considerable full potential.

Ravel Morrison

The prime example of a failed wonderkid within football, Ravel Morrison burst onto the scene at Manchester United when he made his debut at 17 years old against Wolves in the League Cup in 2010.

Sir Alex Ferguson was a key admirer of Morrison, and as a result, he was heavily tipped by the media to be the next big thing at United.

Things haven't panned out the way most were expecting, with Morrison struggling with legal and disciplinary issues throughout his career. He has played for a total of 15 clubs during his senior career and is currently playing for Dubai's second-tier team Precision FC.

Freddy Adu

Tipped as 'the next Pele', Adu was one of the most exciting players to grace the MLS in the mid-2000s.

He even smashed records outside of football during his time at D.C. United from 2004 to 2006. He became the youngest athlete to be given a professional contract in the United States, at the age of 14.

Despite all the hype, Adu didn't come close to becoming the next Pele. He went on to play for 15 different clubs during his career, and his progress was heavily affected thanks to the massive media pressure, as well as his lack of maturity as a young footballer.

Hachim Mastour

Mastour was a wonderkid who was able to showcase his skills to the football world thanks to highlight reels on YouTube in the early 2010s.

Mastour became such an exciting prospect thanks to his highlight reels that AC Milan bought him for €500,000 at the age of 14.

However, he would struggle for chances at AC Milan, so he was loaned out to Malaga for two years. Here, Mastour would struggle again, only making one substitute appearance before his loan was cut short a year early. This pattern continued throughout his career.

Mastour now plays for Virtus Verona in Serie C, a big step down from what was expected of him by the media in his early days as a professional footballer.

**Alen Halilovic **

A player that many may be aware of thanks to his 'wonderkid' status on FIFA 16. Halilovic was tipped to be the next Luka Modric thanks to his performances for Dinamo Zagreb as a teenager.

The Croatian would be bought by Barcelona in 2014 but would only appear for the Catalans a handful of times until he was sent on loan to Sporting Gijon. From that point onwards he would continually fail to reach his assumed potential as he would hop between many clubs, becoming something of a journeyman.

He now plays for Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie, which, in fairness, boasts a good standard of football. But he definitely has not reached the potential that was bestowed upon him early on.

James Vaughan

The Premier League's youngest ever goalscorer at 16 and 271 days, Vaughan was tipped to do great things in English football from that point onwards.

However, he struggled to get consistent appearances at Everton until he left in 2011, and from then on he instead established himself as a solid EFL goalscorer with multiple double-figure scoring campaigns for Huddersfield.

He retired in 2021 at Tranmere Rovers and had a great career, all things considered, but he didn't reach the heights of the Premier League after his famous goal for the Toffees.

Federico Macheda

A player engraved in Manchester United folklore, the Italian excited United fans after his thumping debut goal in a 3-2 win over Aston Villa in the 2008/09 Premier League season.

The media really hyped this goal up and thus named Macheda one of United's wonderkids, similar to Ravel Morrison.

Macheda would only make a total of 19 appearances for Manchester United in a six-year period at the club, mainly due to a number of loan stints. He joined Cardiff in 2014 and struggled there, which prompted a move out of the UK. He did have a good time at Panathinaikos, scoring 36 goals in 106 appearances.

Macheda now plays for Asteras Tripolis in Greece and plays regularly for the side. He has had a decent career but has failed to reach his overall potential.

Jack Rodwell

One of England's finest young midfielders when he came through at Everton, Rodwell had bags of potential.

After a couple of seasons at Everton, he would move to Manchester City in 2012 for a fee of £12 million. This was a lot of money at the time, but he failed to live up to the price tag, struggling for minutes at City due to injury problems, and eventually, he moved to Sunderland in 2014.

Rodwell was solid at Sunderland and would enjoy four seasons at the club. He now plays for Sydney FC in the A-League, which, 10 years ago, was not where fans thought he would be playing in his peak years.

The English midfielder failed to meet expectations that were mainly put on him due to his high price tag in his move to Manchester City.
