Will Isak Get His Newcastle Exit?

The rumours circulating around Alexander Isak and his departure from St James’ Park offer up one of the biggest transfer talking points of the summer transfer window.

The Newcastle forward has recently hit out at the club over “broken promises” as he continues to attempt to force his way out after saying “the relationship can’t continue.”

Liverpool are still the leading candidates for Isak’s signature, with personal terms already agreed between the two parties on a probable six-year contract, however, the Magpies are yet to find a replacement should he leave.

Now, the Reds are facing a race against time, and they are also yet to agree on a transfer fee with the northeast side with deadline day on the horizon on 1 September, at 7pm BST.

With just six days to go before the summer transfer window closes, will the Swede get his move away from Tyneside or will he have to regain their trust in the meantime while he waits for January?

The Situation Remains at a Stand-Off

Isak remains at a distance from the rest of the Magpies squad, with trust between the club and the player appearing to be completely broken. And according to the Mirror, he may now miss out on his dream move altogether because of the manner in which he has gone about trying to make the transfer happen.

Liverpool had put in a bid for the Swedish international of £110m plus add-ons at the start of August, which was then rejected by Newcastle. As of now, they are yet to confirm a higher bid, with fans unsure if they will at all, with Newcastle valuing him “much higher” than their opening bid.

After this, Isak was then left out of the pre-season squad which toured Asia, before he went back to his old club Real Sociedad to train alone before Eddie Howe left him out of the squad for the Premier League opener against Aston Villa.

A few nights on, the Swede released a statement regarding his thoughts on the unfairness of the situation. He said: "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken." "That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.” He added: "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now - and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.“

The club later responded to this statement, saying: "We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. "We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. "As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met."

This has now left the potential transfer more unlikely, with Newcastle claiming later in that statement that they “do not foresee those conditions being met.” These conditions implicated that Isak would have been allowed to leave should the club have been offered their desired fee and if they could find replacements in time – something Liverpool may have shot themselves in the foot with should Isak have been their fully fledged number 1 target.

Have Liverpool Missed Out

Newcastle’s favoured replacement for the 25-year-old was ex-Frankfurt now Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitiké. This has made Isak to Liverpool more difficult to achieve with both clubs being content at the end of it, but will Liverpool think may have actually got the better end of stick here?

Granted, Isak is statistically the better striker and goalscorer than Ekitiké, however, Arne Slot’s side may not look back on this transfer with regret. Their new French forward has hit the ground running, finding the net in each of his first three competitive appearances for the Reds, including in last night’s fiery 3-2 victory over Newcastle.

Ekitiké has seemed to have settled in well at Anfield, while also slotting in perfectly in Slot’s system. Liverpool don’t often miss on transfers, and the 23-year-old only adds to the list of hits.

Although Liverpool haven’t done anything dispirited and there is no foul play involved. But they have seemingly done just enough to the point that the dressing room is unsettled, proven by their solitary point from their opening two games.

Moreover, the Magpies are hugely missing the Swede’s contributions. After scoring five goals in their five pre-season matches, they have also gone on to score just two in their opening two matches of the Premier League season, despite accumulating an xG of 2.41. This proves that they so far missed out on Isak’s clinical finishing, as his 23 goals last campaign came from an xG of just 20.58.

Will He Get His Move In Time?

To keep it simple, with everything that has happened over the last few weeks, this transfer looks unlikely to happen.

Worse for Newcastle, they are now running out of time to find a suitable replacement with Ekitiké and Benjamin Šeško now both off the board. Yesterday, the Tyneside outfit had a £50m bid for Jorgen Strand Larsen rejected, and even he looks to be off limits this summer.

Eddie Howe has offered Isak a opportunity to reconcile with the squad, although recent chants by Magpies fans suggest they won’t necessarily take a straightforward apology.

With Arsenal and Nottingham Forest to play in the next few matches, they must find a reliable striker or a solution with Isak, especially considering a busy autumn and winter schedule as they start entering the domestic cups and the UEFA Champions League.

All of these implications now suggest that Isak’s journey could be over at St James’ Park depending on if an apology is issued and its reception by everyone close to the club. This will, however, make it almost certain that a move away from Tyneside will be what Alexander Isak gets in roughly four months time.
