Brentford v Manchester United | Match Preview

26/03/24 18:21

Premier League action returns this Saturday and the late kick-off sees Brentford host Manchester United at the GTECH Community Stadium.

The Bees will look to move even further away from the relegation zone in this game with what would be a massive win for them. Currently, they sit 15th in the table and five points away from the drop so picking up points at this stage of the season especially is massive.

Although they may seem out of the relegation battle Brentford’s form as of late has been dramatically off the mark. They haven’t won a game since February 10th where they beat Wolves 2-0, since then losing to the likes of West Ham and Burnley in disappointing fashion. This poor run has also seen defeats to big sides such as title challengers Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool as well - games that they won’t have been expected to win by any means.

Manchester United on the other hand will look to continue their decent form of the last two games and catch up in the race for European football. The Red Devils are 6th place at the moment on just 47 points. It will certainly be a tough battle to catch up to Spurs and Aston Villa ahead of them but wins in this game in particular could be huge come the end of the season.

Since the Manchester derby loss, United have picked up two impressive wins. A 2-0 victory against Everton and a fantastic FA Cup Quarter Final win against Liverpool which will definitely put them in a good mindset heading into this game particularly.

Since Brentford made it to the Premier League a few seasons ago these teams have played on five different occasions - with Manchester United picking up four victories to Brentford’s one.

The game at Old Trafford in October ended in a dramatic 2-1 win for Manchester United. This thanks to two Scott McTominay goals in the 93rd and 97th minutes of the game. United dominated that game but Brentford would surely have been disappointed in letting their lead slip - especially in the fashion that they did.

However despite United's dominance in recent years it is hard to ignore the last time Brentford hosted the Red Devils at the start of last season. A 4-0 demolition of Erik Ten Hag’s side. Something that will be in the back of both teams' minds heading into this one.

Thomas Frank has been hit with a lot of injuries in recent games meaning that many different players are set to be unavailable in this one. Josh Dasilva, Rico Henry, Ben Mee, Aaron Hickey, Christian Norgaard and Sergio Reguilon are just a handful of names that are likely to miss out on this one.

However, in more positive news for Brentford fans, Ethan Pinnock looks as though he could be ready to make his return in this game following an ankle injury he got against Wolves in February.

The visitors, Man United, have also struggled with injuries this season. Often being without key players. This game will be no different. They continue to be without Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez in particular and after leaving the England squad recently, Harry Maguire, is now a doubt in this fixture.

United could see a return for Jonny Evans in this game, who will almost certainly take the place of the injured Maguire if he is fit enough to start.

With both teams in desperate need of three points heading into the back end of the season we are bound to see an interesting game in London come Saturday night. We would expect a Manchester United win in this game but wouldn’t put it past Brentford to sneak it either putting an end to their tough run of results.
