Over the years, we have seen countless young stars surge into the limelight for a season or two, and the media immediately starts touting them as the next big thing.
More often than not, these starlets become victims of their own success, with fans and pundits alike putting undue pressure on their shoulders and, as time goes on, we watch their star power wilt until they are a shadow of the player that broke onto the scene.
Evan Ferguson's Potential Move to Wrexham: Reigniting a Stalling Careerhttps://t.co/4S9M1wvRSq

Brighton’s Evan Ferguson is just the latest player to fall victim to this trend. Once valued at £80 million, the Irishman’s loan at Roma has not gone to plan, and in recent days, former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy has advised him to return to England, and he has tipped a potential move to Wrexham as his next destination.
Ferguson was tipped as the next big thing in his first full season at Brighton - at just 18 years old, the teenager netted 10 goals in 25 games, announcing himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising young strikers.
However, at such a young age, he was never going to be able to maintain the same level of performance, and it showed - he scored 6 in 36 in 2023/24, and generally, people understood – as a young player, he was still learning his place in the squad, nailing down his role, and fine-tuning his technique, which, while beneficial in training, hindered his impact on the pitch.
But things didn’t improve - his return of one goal in 15 games last campaign started to become a cause for concern, and Brighton saw fit to send him on loan to West Ham for the second half of the season, in the hope that fresh surroundings and a different style would help him rediscover his confidence.
Despite Brighton taking a chance on his development, Ferguson once again failed to show his 2022/23 levels - he failed to score in just eight games for the Hammers, with Graham Potter quickly deciding that the Irishman was not going to be part of his first-team plans.
As a result, Ferguson returned to Brighton at a crossroads in his career - out of form for two seasons now, this season was likely to be make or break, and so Brighton took another risk in sending him to Italy, where he joined up with AS Roma on a season-long loan.
While his luck has turned to an extent over in the Mediterranean, scoring five and assisting two in 21 games, he still has not found the level of his debut season, and people are starting to think that a move to a lower league could be the only course of action that could revitalise his career.

At one point, Chelsea and Liverpool were circling the striker with monumental bids prepared, and former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has advised Ferguson on a move which has the highest probability of helping him find his form again.
“Evan Ferguson to Wrexham? Possibly. I think the problem with Wrexham for a Championship side is that they've got so many players, including a lot of forwards. But yes, that type of challenge – a team that wants to get promoted, a team that plays good football, a team that plays to your strengths – could work."
Any deal with Wrexham would almost certainly be temporary, but should the unlikely move materialise, then Wrexham would have a superb striker on their hands, and Ferguson would be in the perfect place to rediscover the form that made him one of the most wanted men in Europe.
