A lunchtime victory for Frank Lampard's Coventry against West Bromwich Albion saw the Sky Blues go eight points clear momentarily before the 3pm kick offs began.
What followed in the afternoon was something that every Coventry fan will celebrate as Middlesbrough were held at Oxford United, while Stoke City dropped all three points at the King Power.
This now means Coventry will end the weekend seven points clear no matter what, and gives them ten points breathing room from the playoff places.

Saturday's EFL Championship action began with an entertaining Midlands derby clash between Lampard's league leaders and bottom-half placed West Brom.
The opening half hour of the match went magnificently well for the visitors who found themselves in dreamland after going 2-0 up through goals from Aune Heggebo.
Coventry found themselves back into the game just before the interval, with Josh Eccles heading home from close range.
Things took a turn for the worse for the away side, as Jayden Molumby found himself in the book for a second time, leaving the Baggies to play the rest of the half with ten men - it is safe to say the fans were not best pleased.
The Sky Blues took full advantage of their opponents setback - as many title contenders do - and scored twice within the following 15 minutes through classy strikes from Ellis Simms and Victor Torp.
So the 3pm kickoffs began, as relegation-threatened Oxford United were tasked to host second-placed Middlesbrough.
With the U's having lost more than half of their games coming into this fixture, it was evident who the clear favourites were despite Boro's Rob Edwards leaving them for Wolverhampton Wanderers, leaving them without a manager for this clash.
However, Oxford were not stepping down easy and letting Middlesbrough run all over them, and the U's even took the lead within half an hour through Luke Harris, who struck home well after a delicious cross from Jack Currie.
Middlesbrough did not let it get to them, however, after they were dominating possession throughout and having a majority of the chances.
And they did find themselves a way back into the game eventually, with ex-Plymouth's Morgan Whittaker who returned to the scoresheet for the first time in a month.
It proved to be a valuable point for Oxford, who now find themselves four points clear of the relegation zone.
Stoke City were the final side within range of skimming down Coventry's lead at the top when they headed to Leicester at the King Power.
Despite the visitors dominating for a majority of the game, it was the Foxes who won all three points, scoring both of their shots on target.
Leicester found the breakthrough relatively early in the opening period, with Stephy Mavididi stunning finish earning them an early lead. Zambian international Patson Daka would then later double their advantage before the interval slotting home after a glorious through pass from Abdul Fatawu.
Stoke's Bae Jun-Ho finely struck the visiting side back into the fixture early in the second half, but Leicester stood strong throughout and earned an exceptional 2-1 victory despite creating just a 0.99 xG.
The result leaves Stoke in third, and the Potters are now three points off an automatic spot. Meanwhile, Leicester's victory sees them fly into the top half as their promotion aspirations start to be paved.
