Where did Crystal Palace finish last season?

Ending last season 10th, Palace managed their first top half finish since the 2014/15 campaign, in which they also finished 10th. It reflected the brilliant work that coach Oliver Glasner had done since being brought in for Roy Hodgson in February of this year.

A strong end to the season saw Jean-Phillippe Mateta flourish after a slow start to the season, while Ebere Eze and the recently sold Michael Olise thrived in the new Austrian managers system.

If they can carry the momentum they backed up at the back end of last season into the fast approaching 2024/25 campaign, and maintain their well organized structure out of possession, then big teams will not be relishing facing them.

Best result: Liverpool 0-1 Crystal Palace. (Eze 14’).

Worst result: Arsenal 5-0 Crystal Palace. (Gabriel 11’, 37’, Trossard 59’, Martinelli 90+4’, 90+5’).

Who is Palace’s manager for 2024/25?

Glasner.jpg

Oliver Glasner was something of a revelation for Palace last season. The Austrian had worked wonders at Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt previously (the latter at which he won the 2021/22 Europa League), and was known for his calm persona and counter attacking on-field model.

He took to English football like a duck to water, and he lost just three games after being appointed in February two of which were against Tottenham and Man City. Even more impressively, Palace won six of their last seven games, including two 5 goal hauls against West Ham and Aston Villa respectively.

In particular, Glasner unleashed what turned out to be a lethal front three of Matete, Eze and Olise, who scored 28 goals between them in the last seven games of the season.

He may have lost Olise to Bayern this summer, but with many of last seasons tools still available for him to use, don’t be surprised if Glasner-ball causes a few shocks in 2024/25.

Who is Palace’s player to watch for 2024/25? Ebere Eze.

Eze.jpg

Typically, the loss of a player with the talent and dynamism of Michael Olise would invariably hurt a football club. Fortunately for Palace, they happen to have the perfect man to rely on now the Frenchman has left. Ebere Eze has been one of the Eagles’ standout players for a couple of seasons now, and is fast putting himself on the radar of bigger clubs.

Usually deployed in a central attacking midfield role, Eze’s close control and Brazilian levels of flair wreak havoc on opposing defenders, and if he can’t go past them, he is just as capable of scoring from outside the box and inside.

After an impressive season in which he notched 11 goals and 4 assists, he had impressed Gareth Southgate enough to be given a ticket to Euro 2024. The only minutes he managed were off the bench, but he has given himself a platform to build on, and now with experience of major tournament football, he is certainly in the discussion when England’s new manager picks his first squad.

In terms of club football, Eze may have gone as far as he can with Palace, bar a miracle, and may be seeking a move to a bigger club by next summer. So, with that in mind, enjoy watching him this season as Crystal Palace’s main man.

Season Prediction

The upper mid-table battle is starting to look like it will be exceptionally close. Palace, if they can continue in the same vein of form last season, have more than enough about them to push for European places, assuming they find a good replacement for Olise.

This issue is there are so many other clubs who will be up there competing with them. Newcastle, Brighton, Fulham and even Spurs are in the conversation for being in a mid table battle, and all of these teams have the necessary ability to beat each other.

I think Palace will definitely be up there contesting for Conference League spot right up until the last weeks of the season, and I can certainly see potential for this season to be their best ever in the top flight. But with their lack of top tier, world class experience, I will be staying conservative for now.

Prediction: 11th.
