Dwight Yorke Takes the Helm As Trinidad and Tobago's New Head Coach... But What Will He Bring To The National Team?
Dwight Yorke became the new head coach of Trinidad and Tobago's national team, known as the "Soca Warriors," in early November 2024.
The appointment marks a significant homecoming for the Trinidad and Tobago football icon, his first return to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFA) since his retirement in 2009.
Yorke succeeds Angus Eve, who was dismissed in July.
Speaking to TTFA media after his appointment, Yorke said, "I am proud and privileged to receive the honor of leading the Trinidad and Tobago national team."

Yorke brings managerial experience from his 15-year absence from Trinidad and Tobago football.
He has previously stressed that there is a lack of opportunities for black coaches. He told the BBC in 2017, "Football is a global sport and black players have contributed to the global sport for a number of years."

His most recent role was a brief stint as head coach of Australian A-League side Macarthur FC from May 2022 to January 2023.
While there, Yorke worked alongside his former international teammate Russell Latapy, with whom he won the 2022 Australia Cup.
Yorke and Latapy's relationship dates back to 1989, when they were part of Trinidad and Tobago's "Strike Squad" that narrowly missed qualifying for the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy.
Latapy, who served as Trinidad and Tobago's head coach from 2009-2011, may join Yorke's coaching staff in a reversed role.
Prior to Macarthur FC, Yorke served as assistant coach at Sunderland in 2008/2009.
The former Manchester United striker spent four years with the Red Devils under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. He was a part of the iconic Treble-winning team in the 1998/1999 season - finishing the season as top scorer.
Drawing from his experience as an attacking player, Yorke envisions an offensive-minded approach for the national team. His tactical philosophy emphasizes high-pressing, fluid attacking formations, and quick transitions.
In his final match as Macarthur FC manager in January 2023, he employed a 4-2-3-1 formation. Something we expect to see within his new position.
Trinidad and Tobago supporters are eager to see how quickly players will adapt to Yorke's system, moving away from the previous regime.

The announcement of Yorke's appointment has been met with enthusiasm from various quarters.
Former teammate Shaka Hislop, who played alongside Yorke at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany during the nation's most memorable period, shared his thoughts with ESPN.
"I think they (TTFA) got it right this time, and that's with the greatest respect to our previous managers Dennis Lawrence and Angus Eve who've both been in charge of the team—but results really didn't go their way" he said.
“Dwight started with MacArthur in the A-League, as we know, started quite well, then had a parting of ways - let's just call it that - with the then owner.
“He'd been looking for an opportunity, and I think this has come at exactly the right time for both Dwight and Trinidad and Tobago, given the 2026 qualifying campaign, given all that's at stake, given the fact that the US, Mexico, and Canada are hosting. I think it's one that we really have to be dialled in for."
Yorke's appointment as head coach marks a new era for Trinidad and Tobago football, bringing fresh hope for the Soca Warriors through his experience and widespread national support.
The TTFA has committed its full support to Yorke as he shapes the federation's future direction.
His key objectives are clear: enhance Trinidad and Tobago's FIFA ranking, secure qualification for major tournaments, nurture young talent, and maintain a pragmatic balance between ambition and achievable goals.
