Former Norwich City Striker Sets English Football Record

In a weekend packed with some shocking results and an abundance of drama, something occurred down in the depths of the English football pyramid, and it is not what you would expect.

Down in Non-League Step 6, or Step 10 of the English pyramid, a striker named Jamie Cureton – who may be familiar to OG English football fans, but most may have no idea who he is – has set an incredible new record which may never be broken.

This past weekend, the 50-year-old(!) managed to score for his side King’s Park Rangers FC, making him the first ever footballer to score in each of England’s top 10 divisions.

Currently in the Eastern Counties League Division One North, King’s Park were founded just two years ago in May 2023, and this remarkable feat courtesy of Cureton has given them an overwhelming amount of publicity over the past couple of days.

What Other Clubs Did He Score For?

Starting his career 32 years ago, he never would have expected to make history in this manner and, having only joined King’s Park earlier this month, he did not know one goal would make history.

But his goal off the bench in a 4-1 win against Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers completed his incredibly impressive haul.

His road to scoring in all 10 divisions in England started in dreamland, with his first goal coming in the Premiership for Norwich City when he was just 19 years old. His love for the game didn’t change one bit despite only heading down the leagues, and he deserves so much respect for staying in the game for so long.

Cureton has certainly been around the blocks in his time as a player, starring for AFC Bournemouth, Bristol Rovers, Reading, Queens Park Rangers, Swindon Town, Colchester United, Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Exeter City, Leyton Orient and Cheltenham Town even heading abroad to South Korea to don the Busan I’Cons shirt for the 2003/04 campaign.

The 50-year-old enjoyed a lot of success in the process, having earned promotions with Reading and QPR, winning the Golden Boot also for Colchester.

He built up an impressive portfolio of being mentored by some of the great English coaches, including Alan Pardew, Martin O’Neill, and Ian Holloway.

In 2014, he seemingly ‘retired’ from professional football, and has played the last 11 seasons in the non-league pyramid, starring for the likes Dagenham & Redbridge, Farnborough, Eastleigh, St Albans City, Bishop’s Stortford, Hornchurch, Enfield, Maldon & Tiptree, Cambridge City, and now for King’s Park.

Throughout this time, he has been slowly chipping away more and more goals, notably adding 47 in 82 matches for Bishop’s Stortford, whilst serving as a player-manager!

His 32-year career so far has brought him another major milestone too, in playing over 1,000 club games. In more recent seasons, he has taken on a more player-coaching role but switched back to a striker role when signing for King’s Park.

This is not the last goal Cureton has for himself, as he wants to achieve 400 goals in club football – something which is now within arms reach.
