Last five results between the two Manchester clubs:
Winning the league for the fourth season running in May, City are slowly but surely turning the Premier League into a farmers’ league of their own. Six of the last seven titles, the pick of the best players in the country, and arguably the best manager to ever take to the touchline, the Cityzens go into every season as favorites.
Pep Guardiola’s men have become an unstoppable footballing force, particularly in the past two years, in which they finally ended their Champions League voodoo.
With that particular weight off their shoulders, they have grown into probably the best team in Europe, and just need to find consistency in the Champions League football to propel themselves into a new stratosphere of dominance.
Other teams in the league always seem to be playing catch up with City, and with the wealth of talent and experience in their arsenal, it seems next to impossible for rivals to draw level with them.
They did however experience a shock in the FA Cup final against neighbors Manchester United, which showed other teams that they are beatable if you can commit to the right game plan. However, it is rare Manchester City have an off day, and when they do, they tend to bounce back from it in style.
Best result: Manchester City 6-1 Bournemouth. (City: Doku 30’, Silva 33’, 83’, Akanji 37’, Foden 64’, Ake 88’. Bournemouth: Sinisterra 74’).
Worst result: Wolves 2-1 Manchester City. (Wolves: Dias O.G 13’, Hwang 66’. City: Alvarez 58’).
Pep Guardiola is once again the man to emulate as he heads towards the start of his ninth campaign in charge of the blue side of Manchester. As a coach he has never finished below third in the league, a remarkable statistic considering he has been in management since 2008.
Having played under Johan Cruyff at Barcelona, Pep’s tactical style is inspired by Cruyff’s impressive attacking onslaught that he introduced to European football in the 80’s, while adding his own twist of high pressing and possession domination. Just think of the merciless tiki-taka football his own Barcelona side employed in the 2008/09 season, and you can see why he has been so successful.
Bringing this football to England marked the start of a new era for the Premier league, and since taking charge of City in 2016, he has won six out of nine premier league campaigns. A remarkable record, all while winning every other trophy the game has to offer.
A bona fide legend, Guardiola may well let his contract expire at the end of the season, indicating an opportunity for other teams to finally end his dominance. However, while he remains in Manchester, the league only has one predictable outcome.
Any member of the City squad could realistically have been chosen as a key player. De Bruyne, Haaland, Walker, Silva, Rodri and Dias would all receive little push back if chosen for this section. However, for his standout performances last season, and his subsequent labeling as the Premier League player of the season, Foden seems like the sensible choice.
With six League titles, a Champions League medal and countless domestic competition medals in his locker while aged just 24, Foden has already won virtually everything possible. However, it is only in the last two seasons that he has become a consistent starter in the Man City super team.
Making 67 appearances in the last two campaigns, bagging 30 goals and 8 assists in the process, Foden has firmly cemented himself as one of the best English footballers around.
He had a quiet Euro 2024, failing to get a goal involvement, but part of his lackluster performances may have been down Gareth Southgate playing him out of position, and could also be attributed to fatigue, after what was an intense season for his club.
No doubt he will be back to his best for the 2024/25 season, and with a real breakthrough last year, he will likely be the most dangerous version of himself that we have seen yet.
Realistically, barring an extraordinary season from Arsenal or Liverpool, Manchester city are on track to continue their dominance, and look set to win their seventh title in eight years.
It speaks volumes that Pep Guardiola has stated that should there be no more sales of first team players, it would not be necessary to bring in any more new signings, such is the strength of his squad.
Proven at winning titles and playing consistently across a 38 game season, the Man City squad could be labeled as the strongest the Premier League has ever seen, and with a moniker like that, it would be considered a disappointment if they were to fail to finish top of the pile.
Without injuries to key players or catastrophic mid-season form, Man City look likely to walk the league once again. Teams will truly relish the day that Pep Guardiola leaves Manchester.
