Sunday Premier League Round Up

After Saturday’s action-packed games, Sunday’s five delivered much the same throughout all five, as 15 goals were scored across them.

There were some surprises, a dominant display, and two penalty saves today and we’re here to put you in the know about what these games have done to the Premier League table during this Remembrance Sunday.

Aston Villa cruise past Bournemouth

Aston Villa 4-0 Bournemouth

Goals: Buendia (28’), Onana (40’), Barkley (77’), Malen (82’)

Four goals for Unai Emery’s Villains saw his side cruise past a despaired Cherries outfit who’s 2 xG suggest the game should have been closer than it was.

The match was epitomised for the visitors once Antoine Semenyo had his penalty saved by Emiliano Martinez to deny Bournemouth getting back into the fixture with just 23 minutes left on the clock – then goals by Ross Barkley and Donyell Malen followed to ensure a fourth successive league victory at Villa Park.

Another Emiliano, this time Buendia scored the pick of the bunch for the Claret and Blues with a delicious free-kick finish before the half-hour mark. This came before Amadou Onana doubled the lead for the hosts just before the break with a smart low-driven effort.

Bournemouth flew out the gates early in the second half and created a lot more chances as they sought to half the deficit – this chance did come, but at a cost to Semenyo and his many FPL managers who saw their star midfielder fail to convert.

The better half of the 40,000 fans present then got to see two more Villa goals, with the first coming from Barkley courtesy of gorgeous glancing header before Malen had luck on his side as Youri Tielemans’ effort deflected off the Dutch international to wrong-foot Cherries ‘keeper Djordje Petrovic.

The result means Villa moves up to sixth in the table on goal difference following the 4:30 kick-off in Manchester. As for Bournemouth, they have now conceded seven goals on the road in the last two and drop to ninth.

Brentford’s Home is Becoming a Fortress

Brentford 3-1 Newcastle United

Goals: Schade (56’), Thiago (78’ pen, 90’+5); Barnes (27’)

A second half comeback with goals from Kevin Schade and Igor Thiago gave the Bees their fourth home win of the season – launch-padding them to 12th.

The game started well for the visitors – who are now winless in their opening six games on the road – with Harvey Barnes notching his first goal of the league season to give Newcastle a first half lead.

Shortly after the second period began, Brentford found their way back into the game after Schade took full advantage of a poor clear by Sven Botman.

It was then minutes of absolute chaos for the Magpies who saw Dan Burn receive a red card after taking down Dango Ouattara inside the box before Nick Pope had to make way for Aaron Ramsdale before the spot-kick was taken.

Thiago coolly slotted his penalty to give Brentford the lead. Things went from bad to worse for Newcastle in injury time when Malick Thiaw had a moment to forget of his own after failing to deal with a through ball – struck past Ramsdale again to give Thiago his second of the afternoon.

The result now means that Newcastle drops to 14th, just two points above the relegation zone on 12.

Goalless at Selhurst

Crystal Palace 0-0 Brighton

The two-highest drawing teams of the campaign met at Selhurst Park this afternoon in what was initially a game which anticipated lots of goals.

However, after not many clear-cut opportunities were created, the game eventually fell to a drub nil-nil result to leave both sides no better off than they were at the start of the day.

What the game did return with was another display of defensive solidity from the hosts, who found their third clean sheet in four games.

It wasn’t a given, however, as the Eagles had to rely on a VAR intervention to overturn a Georginio Rutter “foul” which was later deemed a dive.

Dyche Ball is Back

Nottingham Forest 3-1 Leeds United

Goals: Sangare (15’), Gibbs-White (68’), Anderson (90’+1); Nmecha (13’)

It was a very exciting match at The City Ground as a four-goal thriller ended in Sean Dyche picking up his first league victory as Forest manager.

The fixture never looked like giving a sense of a dry game, with Lukas Nmecha giving the visitors an early lead – something which lasted just two minutes as Ibrahim Sangare capitalised on a poor parry from Leeds ‘keeper Lucas Perri to restore parity in the opening minutes.

Morgan Gibbs-White returned to the scoresheet for successive league games, as he headed home by getting on to the end of a pinpoint cross from Omari Hutchinson – proving he potentially should have had a spot in the England squad for the upcoming break.

One player who did make the squad, once again, was Elliot Anderson who celebrated it in style by scoring a late penalty to ensure the Tricky Trees would pick up their second win of the season.

This win means the hosts remain in 19th but are just three points behind Newcastle in 14th. As for Leeds, they remain in 16th place, just a point above the drop zone.

City Cruise Past Liverpool in Pep’s 1000th Game

Manchester City 3-0 Liverpool

Goals: Haaland (29’), Gonzalez (45’+3), Doku (63’)

The match was not only highlighted by its 2-minute silence but also Pep Guardiola’s 1000th match in management – and what a game it was for the hosts.

They kept the lacklustre visitors quiet for most of the game, as Arne Slot’s side were not able to back up their 1-0 win over Real Madrid in midweek and they were barely able to string together many meaningful chances.

Liverpool may still be seething at their disallowed first half goal, which Virgil van Dijk converted from a Mo Salah corner due to Andrew Robertson being deemed offside after ducking in an offside position to allow the ball to go past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Manchester City had their own mistakes, however, after Erling Haaland had his early penalty saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili, with the Georgian making up for his mistake after fouling Jeremy Doku inside the box.

It didn’t take too long for the Norwegian to find the scoresheet, however, as his headed goal chalked his tally up to 14 in just 11 games.

Shortly after van Dijk had to accept he didn’t find the equaliser, the hosts doubled their lead courtesy of Nico Gonzalez on the stroke of half time. His long-range effort deflected heavily off van Dijk’s trailing leg and rolled past a wrong-footed Mamardashvili.

Doku then joined the party and capped off his magnificent display with this outrageous effort to seal a player of the match award and a crucial three points to move up to second and close the gap to Arsenal, which stands at four.

Meanwhile, Slot’s Reds have work to do after the final international break of 2025, as they drop to eighth, eight points behind leaders Arsenal and four behind City – it will be some effort from here if they are able to defend their title.
