What Is Going On At Manchester United Women?

26/06/24 15:02

It is all kicking off inside Manchester United Women this week.

First of all, it has been announced that Mary Earps is set to leave the club to sign for PSG.

After joining United five years ago, Earps has elected to run down her contract and leave as a free agent.

It is unconfirmed what the actual figure of her wages will be, but it is speculated that she will be the highest paid goalkeeper in women’s football, deservedly so.

Tier three rated source, Ben Jacobs, has stated that PSG have been working towards this deal for the last couple of months to make sure that the signing is secured.

They will look to Earps to try and achieve a second Première Ligue title and that illustrious UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy after being runners-up on two separate occasions.

She ends her career in Manchester on a high after winning the Adobe Women’s FA Cup last season, beating Tottenham Hotspur Women 4-0 in front of an incredible 76,082 attendance at Wembley, a testament to the modern women’s game. In the Women’s Super League she kept seven clean sheets, playing every single game.

Internationally it’s a different story with back to back major tournament finals, winning England their first ever European Championship, including both the men’s and women’s games.

The 31 year old is definitely one of the top three keepers in the world right now, if not top one.

Manchester United are looking to replace Earps with Bayern Munich’s Maria Luisa Grohs.

Florian Plettenberg, a tier one source rated by Football Park, says that she would like to fulfil a personal target of playing in the Women’s Super League. With Earps’ spot vacant, now is the perfect time for the German to make her move over to England.

The second bit of unwelcome news for Manchester United is that winger Lucia Garcia is also leaving the club at the end of the season as well.

The Women’s World Cup winner scored a brace in that 4-0 win over Spurs, essentially single-handedly winning the FA Cup for United.

Similar to Earps, she also featured in every single WSL game that United played last season.

Over her two years of dedication to the club, she scored 16 goals across all competitions.

It is looking likely that she will join Mexican league champions Rayadas, with the contract details unconfirmed.

The final straw that might be the reason that so many players, including England star and crucial starter Katie Zelem who has now been confirmed to exit the club, are wanting to leave is that the women’s game is still not being treated equally or with respect.

The Guardian, Football Park ranked tier two source, have exclusively reported that the Manchester United men’s side will train on the women’s facilities whilst their buildings are being renovated, demoting the women’s team to portable buildings.

Commenting on the situation Sir Jim Ratcliffe has said,

“We’ve been pretty much focused on how do we resolve the first-team issues, in that environment, and that’s been pretty full-time for the first six months.”

Ratcliffe caught stick online from fans after he remarked that he’s barely looked into the future plans for the women’s team and it later got revealed that he was in attendance at a men’s side match versus Arsenal on the same day that the women’s side were playing at Wembley in the FA Cup Final, eventually going on to win the trophy.

Fans are rightly outraged by this decision as it sends an awful message to all the young fans of the club and the sport as women’s football is just as important as men’s football.

It is disrespectful to consider the women’s side as an afterthought with the language of calling the men’s side the “first-team.”

If things continue down this path it could discourage the next generation of girls and women alike to give up on their dreams if there are not equal opportunities.

Manchester United need to sort out their troubles quick or they will be in for a massive shock to the system in the upcoming season.
