The Champions League for the 2024/25 season has a brand new format.
Usually, each club would be put into a group with three other teams, each playing each other twice in the group stages. The top two teams would then qualify for the knockout stage.
Now though, it’s completely different.
The clubs in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League will instead play eight different teams, made up of four home matches and four away matches.
During the group stage, clubs will all now enter a 36 team league phase. Allowing another four teams to take part in the competition as a whole.
The fixtures during this league phase will be decided by a draw, with two teams drawn from each of the four seeded pots.
The top eight teams in the league phase at the end of the eight game cycle, will directly qualify for the round of 16. Whilst the teams in 9th-24th will go through to a knockout play-off round. Teams ranked lower than 24th, from 25th to 36th will be eliminated from the competition.
From the round of 16, the knockout stage will mostly be the same. Two-legged games all the way to a one-legged final to seal the tournament.
Real Madrid are the all-time favourites to win the Champions League. Their 2024 victory was their 15th UCL trophy. That’s more than double the tally of second placed AC Milan, with seven titles.
Additionally, with the signing of Kylian Mbappe, it looks like Los Blancos could well be on track to dominate Europe once more. Stopping Real Madrid was already impossible. But now with Mbappe, no team in the world has a chance.
Nonetheless, Premier League giants Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool will certainly throw their hats in the ring. Liverpool has the 3rd most UCL titles in history with 6, alongside Bayern Munich.
Next up is Barcelona with five UCL titles. They won their first title in 1992 under the management of Johan Cruyff. Subsequently, they defeated Arsenal in the 2006 final and claimed victory in the 2009, 2011, and 2015 tournaments.
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will be seeking revenge against Real Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid bested Bayern in the semi-final thanks to a controversial decision in the closing moments. Whilst Dortmund made it to the final, but couldn’t defend against the superb Vinicius Junior.
