After this week in the Champions League where many teenagers stole the show, it got me wondering, who are the teenagers who have had the best performances in the history of the competition? We will be looking at the top 10 best and ranking who had the best performance as a teenager in the Champions League.
As expected, a Barcelona player is on this list with the Catalonian giants often giving young players a chance on Europe’s biggest stage and they did this with Gavi. The then 17-year-old was played in a 0-0 draw vs Benfica and didn’t disappoint. The play maker was one of the standout players in this match with his confidence and ability. The play maker won the most duels in this game winning showing while he was young, he had the ability and physicality to go head-to-head against some of the best players in Europe and win the challenges, adding onto this his impressive 97% pass accuracy and 4 successful dribbles (most in the game). It was a very impressive performance. This confidence was especially important as the period Barcelona was in, the confidence was at an all-time low as they had just lost their greatest ever player. This performance was something they needed and wouldn’t have expected from a teenage midfielder.
This match where once again a midfielder from Barcelona showed his levels against one of Europe’s elite clubs. This time it was Pedri. The midfielder showed some incredible ability and football IQ in this match. The performance was so impressive he was drawing comparisons after this game to 2 of the best midfielders not only to play for Barcelona, but to ever grace the football pitch. Pedri was seeing his name and game style compared to Xavi and Iniesta. Some very high praise for a teenager who was trying to find himself. Especially while doing this while playing in a position that isn’t where he would naturally play. The teenage sensation was one of the reasons behind the dominant 2-0 win for Barcelona.
This list is getting very familiar as we see the third straight player from Barcelona make an entrance to this list. However, this one is a bit different as Fati didn’t start the game, instead it was a cameo that earned his place on the list. After being subbed on in the 85th minute, many people wouldn’t expect a 17-year-old to have much of an impact in a game between 2 giants of European football, but no, he had an impact. After only a minute on the pitch Barcelona was 2-1 up and the scorer was none other than 17-year-old Ansu Fati who become the youngest ever goal scorer in the UCL a record that he still holds to this day at 17 years old and 40 days.
A game against the team that would end up making the final, and a 17-year-old stole the show. Bellingham was incredibly strong in this game and this was one of the main matches that put his name in the conversation as one of the best talents and midfielders in Europe. After putting Dortmund ahead in the 15th minute, he kept that level up, going head-to-head against one of the best midfields in the world and holding his own against players with over a decade’s worth of experience, he put on a performance that had the maturity of someone well above his years.
Tonight, Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly (18 years, 194 days) becomes the second youngest Englishman to start a Champions League quarterfinal game (vs Real Madrid) after Borussia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham (17 years, 281 days) versus Man City on 6th April 2021.#UCL #ARSRMA pic.twitter.com/ZULsjypNhA

In a game that had the likes of Benzema, Hazard, and Kroos, an 18-year-old Brazilian talent stole the show. Rodrygo was involved in 4 out of the 6 goals scored in this game by Real Madrid with a hattrick and an assist. This match was the match that everyone knew his name and was a game that cemented him as one of the best talents in Europe. He was simply magic in this game and showed his levels and why Real Madrid had bought him to the club. He is the youngest Brazilian to have ever scored a hattrick in the Champions League, and this performance definitely deserves a sport on this lit, the only reason for it not being higher is the stage of the competition it was done in.
Real Madrid now getting some names on the list and this one is special. One of the greatest players in the club’s history started off by making his name against one of the most famous and best clubs in the world. In 1998 Juventus had a super team and was one of the team’s you would need to beat to even have a hope of any success in Europe. Real Madrid did this with some magic from a young Spanish forward. The 18-year-old didn’t just score a simple tap in, no, he scored one of the best goals from a teenager with the composure of someone years older than him. He was played through before sitting down 2 of Juventus’s defenders and scoring to win Real Madrid the game at the competition. The stage and the goal are definitely enough for the striker to have earned his place here on the list.
Now one of the best strikers in Europe and an absolute goal machine. When he played this game, he was a relatively unknown name making his debut in the Champions League, however, after this game his name would be known. Haaland didn’t just have a good debut in the topflight of Europe’s football, he had a historic one. Scoring a hattrick and grabbing the attention of everyone. This game can definitely be used as one of the reasons for why his January move to Dortmund happened. One of if not the greatest Champions League debuts, doing this as a teenager is unheard of.

The only reasons Haaland’s debut might not be considered the greatest Champions League debut ever is become another striker did it, 15 years earlier. Very similar story to Haaland, Rooney didn’t take long to announce himself to the world. In his first game scoring a hattrick against one of the biggest teams from Turkey. Now you might be wondering why this is higher than Haaland, the main reasons being Rooney was a year younger than the striker. Very similar achievements both bagging a hattrick, but Rooney doing this after just turning 18 puts him in the sport just above Haaland.
Here he is, another Barcelona player, and this time their greatest and the greatest of all time. The then 18-year-old faced one of the best teams in the world in Jose’s Chelsea and made them look like a joke. While he didn’t score, he made the team that had its foundations built on the impenetrable defence look like a joke. He tore the defence apart and influenced a game more than any teenager should. His influence was second to none that game and he was causing issues everywhere he went on the pitch. The pinnacle of his game was getting Del Horno a red card. This was one of the games where he truly announced himself.
The best performance in the Champions League by a teenager. 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe was a thorn in the side of Pep’s Manchester City. The forward was nightmare fuel for Pep’s defence even as a teenager. His confidence and ability mixed with his pace was a mixture that allowed him to dominate the matches especially the second leg where he scored. Adding onto this the team around him and the team he was facing, being able to carry a team against Manchester City is something that can’t be overlooked especially when you are a teenager doing this. This game he truly announced himself to Europe as the best talent and he carried this on.
