Colchester's Loss, Charlton's Gain? The Urgent Debate Over a Micah Mbick January Recall

Mbick's Stunning Season in League Two That Has Charlton Athletic Fans Demanding His Return

Two years ago, Micah Mbick scored three minutes into his Charlton Athletic debut. Just a week after his 17th birthday, the Newham-native forward found the back of the net as a substitute in an FA Cup tie at Cray Valley PM.

Whilst it might not have been at Old Trafford or Anfield, Mbick’s goal at the humbly titled ‘Badgers Sports Ground’ was the start of something special. Now two years later, the 2006-born talent is starring in League Two for Colchester United and is rapidly gathering the attention that overlooked him back in 2023.

Essential Experience in Essex

Charlton Athletic extended Mbick’s contract by an additional three years this summer, showing clear intent that they plan to keep the youngster around as he reaches his 20s. Nathan Jones also made a statement by substituting Mbick onto the field in the League One play-off final against Leyton Orient earlier this year. The game was far from over at a 1-0 scoreline, but the teenager was still trusted to play the final 15 minutes and see out a memorable victory at Wembley.

As the club looked to move Mbick on from youth football and into the senior game, a loan move to the fourth tier was fitting. League Two is a common destination for many in Championship academies, especially forwards looking to gain confidence in front of goal.

Jones, a former Premier League manager and current boss at the Valley, spoke upon the deal's completion, "Micah is a fantastic talent who has a great scoring record throughout the development level. We feel that he needs game time and given the competition we have, to further his development, we felt he needed an EFL loan.”

Mbick has made 14 appearances for Colchester United so far, averaging a goal every other game. It took 93 minutes of football for the 19-year-old to score his first goal for the club. An equalising goal in a draw against Bristol Rovers, the game in which he was also handed his first start.

Since then, he has started 12 of the possible 14 games, becoming the main man up top for the U’s while playing alongside several experienced senior professionals.

Capturing Hearts at Colchester

Thanks to his form in CO4, Mbick received an England U20s call-up, making his first appearance at any level for the national team against Japan earlier this month. His work rate and attitude were highlighted when he returned to the Colchester squad to appear off the bench against Walsall less than 24 hours after representing his nation for the first time.

Colchester United manager Danny Cowley described Mbick’s efforts that day as “incredible”. Cowley, alongside his brother Nick, is renowned for his time at Lincoln City, another club where many young loanees have thrived.

Mbick is already building an impressive highlight reel of finishes, including a stunning brace in October against Grimsby Town, which included an unbelievable 30-yard lob of the keeper that won the League Two goal of the month.

His effort against Cheltenham last weekend was another superb strike, entering the box and side-stepping two opposing defenders before sending a sailing ball in off the crossbar, making it two goals in his last two games. It’s clear to all around Colchester United that this kid is special, but how long will it take for the rest to catch on?

Mbick’s Next Move

Fans of Charlton Athletic have begun to question whether Mbick should be recalled early to aid the Addicks’ injury issues. Before a ball was kicked this season, the youngster had four strikers ahead of him in the pecking order. Since then, Charlie Kelman and Matty Godden have both been hit with long-term injuries. Miles Leaburn and Tanto Olaofe are the two fit strikers remaining but have scored a single Championship goal each this season.

The worrying lack of threat up top is supported in the statistics, too. Charlton’s strikers have attempted 16% of the South London side’s shot attempts this season, leaving the midfielders to take the majority of chances (40%). This is the lowest percentage of any side in the league.

Partner the numbers with the fact that Charlton have scored two goals in their last four games, losing all four of those fixtures, and the idea of bringing Mbick back into the frame doesn’t seem so ridiculous.

For the players' personal development, staying put in Colchester is the best option, where he can continue to garner invaluable minutes and score goal after goal. However, for the club, it might be worth a roll of the dice in the hope that Mbick can hit the ground running in the second tier.

A similar situation occurred last season with Nathan Lowe, who scored 18 goals in 30 appearances for Walsall in League Two before being recalled prematurely by Stoke City. He went on to make five starts for the Potters, scoring a single goal.

Chairman Gavin Carter, Jones, and others on board at Charlton will have some big decisions to make regarding the 19-year-old’s future in the upcoming weeks, but ultimately, with the Addicks’ place in the Championship far from safe, the Mbick gamble might be the only option the club can bank on.
