Former EFL Boss Closes On New Club: Here’s How He Can Help Their Plight

The last couple of weeks for Rangers have been packed with turmoil, with Russell Martin's sacking on the 5th October being the catalyst in a series of events. Fast forward to the present day, and Danny Rohl is looking set to become the new manager at Ibrox, a complete U-turn from his statement less than a week ago. Can the former Sheffield Wednesday boss kick-start The Gers' season?

Who is Danny Rohl?

Danny Rohl has only ever managed one club in his managerial career, but gathered much of his experience through being an assistant coach. This can be put down to his young age of 36, which, in player terms, makes Rohl a youngster breaking onto the footballing scene.

His first senior management job was at Sheffield Wednesday, the German manager being appointed to the role in October 2023. This made him the youngest manager in the English Football League.

After a successful first campaign in charge by keeping Wednesday in the Championship on the last day of the season, Rohl signed a contract extension until 2027.

In his second and final campaign at the club, the former Wednesday boss secured a 12th place finish for The Owls with 58 points. A successful season for Rohl, which was backed up by his nomination for the Championship Manager of the Month award in December 2024.

However, things started to go wrong for the German international during the summer break, as Wednesday’s financial problems and disarray in club ownership caused the breakdown of his relationship with the club.

On the 29th July it was announced that Rohl would part ways with the Owls through mutual agreement with the club. After his sacking the former Sheffield Wednesday boss said the main contributing reason that led to his departure was “a lack of dialogue” from the club.

How has the situation at Rangers given Rohl a second chance?

It's fair to say that Rangers have massively underperformed so far this season, winning just one league game from a possible eight. The club sit in 6th place in the Scottish Premiership on a measly nine points, 13 adrift of league leaders Hearts.

After a horrific 2024/25 season with Southampton, Russell Martin looked to get his managerial career back on track when he was announced as the new Rangers boss in June 2025.

The 39-year-old signed on a three-year deal; however, he only saw out four months of the contract. His stint at the club was scattered with some very low moments, including the 9-1 aggregate loss to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs, a harrowing moment for all associated with the club.

After Rangers drew 1-1 with Falkirk on 5th October, Martin was sacked to become the quickest manager to get fired in Rangers history. He was only in charge of the Scottish side for 123 days, which has only compounded his misery from his time at Southampton.

With that being said, one man’s pain is another man’s gain, and Danny Rohl is looking increasingly likely to benefit from Russell Martin’s sacking. It’s been a rollercoaster of events so far for the 36-year-old, as his initial interest in the job was diminished with other potential managers ahead of him in the pecking order.

Once learning that negotiations with potential candidate and ex-player Kevin Muscat fell through on Sunday, Rohl has reignited his interest in becoming the new Rangers manager.

Could it be written in the stars that Rohl is given a second chance, especially when you consider his impressive form at Sheffield Wednesday? The former Owls manager has the perfect opportunity to turn The Gers' season around after an abysmal start to the campaign.

If Rangers appoint Rohl before their Europa League tie against Brann on Thursday, it gives the 36-year-old a chance to make an instant impact. With the Scottish side having lost both of their two opening Europa League games, a win on his managerial debut for Rangers would certainly help improve the mood around the club.

How Rohl’s style of play can help reignite Rangers’ season

Despite Danny Rohl’s lack of managerial experience, the 36-year-old has already shown that he has the potential to become a manager at the highest level of the game. His flexible and adaptable approach is one of his biggest strengths, changing his side’s formation and game plan based on both his opposition and the in-game situation he is faced with.

His fluctuation between the 3-4-2-1 and 4-2-3-1 formations enables his team to be proactive in the face of adversity, providing an unpredictable element to his game.

The 36-year-old's attacking and aggressive style of play has the potential to suit his new Rangers team. Josh Windass and Djeidi Gassama were players that benefited from this at Wednesday, scoring 20 league goals between them.

This type of play would benefit Gassama, who ironically is now at Rangers after completing a move to the Scottish side in the summer. Being able to link up with his old manager could be the spark that ignites the Rangers winger into life, and with it the club's season.

Another player that would thrive under Rohl’s management is James Tavernier. The Gers right-back has been the main man in that team now for years, so often stepping up to the occasion when it matters most.

The Rangers club captain will be able to exploit the attacking nature of full-backs in Rohl’s system, as the 36-year-old allows his wing backs to get involved in the final third.

This will allow The Gers’ most important player to operate in dangerous areas and naturally make the team more threatening around the opposition’s box.

The German manager has the potential to thrive at Rangers and deserves the chance to as well. His spell with Sheffield Wednesday laid down the foundations of his managerial career, with Rangers potentially being the next club in his early career of being a manager.
