List Of Football Clubs Without the Letter 'A' In The Name...

Last night, we stumbled across a tweet that got us thinking, how many football clubs are there, which you can name off the bat, that don't contain the letter "A" in them?

Seems easy, right? Bet you can do a maximum of 5 without Google.

Here is Arthur's honest, off-the-cuff list of 10 clubs he was able to name that don't have 'A' in them. Alongside this, let's take a brief look at these clubs and their history.

Brentford (England)

Affectionately known as "The Super Bees" by fans and avid football fans alike, Brentford were founded in 1889. A mainstay in the English Football League, the West London-based club were promoted to the Premier League in 2021 after defeating Swansea in the play-off final.

Brentford haven't been back down since, and have made some alarming noise during their Premier League tenure thus far. Some iconic "Streets Won't Forget" players such as Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa lit up the Gtech Community Stadium during their time at the club. Ivan Toney also scored over 20 goals in a Premier League season for Brentford before moving to Saudi Arabia.

After losing Mbeumo and Wissa, and their devouted manager Thomas Frank in the summer after a 7-year stint, the Bees look deflated this season. However, there may be more to come from them, with Brazillian striker Igor Thiago quickly making a name for himself in the Premier League.

Como (Italy)

Perhaps one of the best locations to watch and play football in the world, Como FC are based in, you guessed it, Como, Lombardy, Italy.

Coached by the legendary Cesc Fabregas, Como achieved promotion to the Serie A at the end of the 2023/24 campaign. Their first season saw them finish 10th, but they may be looking to do a bit better this season after acquiring some serious talent in the summer.

Dele Alli also featured for the Italian outlet, making his debut in March 2025, lasting a whole 9 minutes before being sent off.

Como are an exciting team to watch, brimming with young talent and an ambitious coach.

Feyenoord (Netherlands)

Moving over to the Netherlands, Feyenoord. Based in Rotterdam, the side have won the Eredivisie 16 times, with their most recent win being in 2023. Famous for their youth academy, Feyenoord have produced some unbelievable talent over the years.

Dirk Kuyt, Robin van Persie, and Ruud Gullit all had stints at Feyenoord in their careers. Dirk Kuyt famously returned to the side in 2015, and won the league with them before retiring in 2017.

The most recent success story to come out of the Rotterdam club is Arne Slot, who won the Premier League in his first season in charge of Liverpool.

Empoli (Italy)

Our writer has played a lot of FIFA in his time.

Based in Tuscany, Empoli are currently playing their football in the Serie B. Their biggest achievement is the 3 Serie B titles they have won. Something of a yo-yo club, Empoli bounce up and down from the top flight every few seasons. They even featured in the UEFA Cup, now known as the Europa League, in the 2007/08 season.

Their biggest claims to fame? The side once employed none other than Antonio di Natale and was also coached by Claudio Ranieri at one point.

Bristol City (England)

Taking a trip to the southwest of England, Bristol City play their football in the EFL Championship.

Over the years, the Robins have had some faces play for them that have gone on to have fantastic careers. Most notably, Bournemouth signed Ghanaian star Antoine Semenyo from Bristol City. After speaking with a Bristol City fan, he claims he fully expected Semenyo to be at the heights he is now, claiming he was the best player to ever touch the pitch of Ashton Gate.

"Bristol, Quick stop at Bournemouth, then a trip to the Bernabeu for him!" - from a anonymous Bristol City fan

Moreover, Saïd Benrahma played his football at Bristol, as did Lloyd Kelly, who now plays for Italian giants Juventus.

Bristol City, a feeder club for the elite.

Celtic (Scotland)

Perhaps the biggest club in Scotland, Celtic are a household name in the footballing world.

Winning 55 Scottish League titles, 42 Scottish Cups, 22 Scottish League Cups, and a Champions League in 1967, Celtic fully deserve to be considered one of the biggest clubs around.

In the 2016/17 season, Celtic completed a full 38-match season in the league without losing a single game. Going invincible, they inevitably went on to win the title. This was huge for Kolo Touré, who is now one of the only players to go invincible with two different clubs, Arsenal and Celtic.

Swedish legend Henrik Larsson also had a stint at Celtic Park, and is one of the club's biggest ever success stories. Larsson scored 227 times in 301 appearances before moving to Barcelona in 2004.

On the topic of legends, one of the biggest "streets won't forget" players ever, Shunsuke Nakamura, also donned the white and green. Famous for his dead-ball prowess, Nakamura set Scotland alight for 5 years.

Club Brugge (Belgium)

Based in Bruges, Belgium, Club Brugge have 19 Belgian league titles to their name. The side were also runners-up in the Champions League final in 1978.

A mainstay in the Champions League to this day, Club Brugge is brimming with young talent. Scott Parker managed the club for a brief stint a few years ago, which was seen by many as an appointment to forget.

Bidvest Vits (South Africa)

Perhaps an obscure choice, our writer spent 10 years living in South Africa, so he promises this isn't a Google search.

Nicknamed "the Clever Boys", the side are based in Johannesburg and have a close affiliation with the University of Witwatersrand.

Bidvest Vits play their football in the top tier of South Africa, the PSL. Their most famous player ever? None other than Premier League veteran Steven Pienaar.

Steven Pienaar is one of South Africa's biggest success stories. Starting off life at Ajax Cape Town, Pienaar moved to Amsterdam to join the real Ajax, before moving to Borussia Dortmund. After Dortmund, Pienaar spent 3 seasons at Everton before moving to Tottenham Hotspur.

In a move that he may look back on as a mistake, Pienaar returned to Everton on loan after the 2011/12 season and then permanently rejoined the club the following season. Spending a further 4 seasons at Everton, Pienaar moved to Sunderland for a year, before enjoying his last season of football back home at Bidvest Vits in 2018.

Cruzeiro (Brazil)

From South Africa to South America, Cruzeiro play their football in the Brazilian Serie A. They have won 4 Serie A titles and a record six Copa do Brasil titles.

Besides all the history, the side are most famous for having Ronaldo, the original one, R9, in their ranks for the 1993/94 season. At 19 years of age, R9 scored 34 goals in 34 league appearances before moving to PSV the following season.

It was these performances from a young age in a Cruzeiro shirt that made El Fenomeno the player he was.

Lyon (France)

Finishing off the list is Lyon, based in central France.

Lyon are famous for their youth academy. Players that have come through Lyon are Alexandre Lacazette, Maxime Gonalons, Loic Remy and countless more big names. Lacazette played his final game for the club at the end of last season and is widely regarded as one of the best to ever play for Lyon

On the topic of "streets won't forget" players, Lyon was once home for Brazilian midfielder Juninho. Arguably the greatest free-kick taker of all time, Juninho set the Groupama Stadium alight during his 8-year spell.

Lyon have won 7 Ligue 1 titles and have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League twice. In a Champions League campaign halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Lyon defeated Man City in the quarter-finals. The side then lost to Bayern Munich in the semi-finals, who would go on to win the competition.

Recently, Lyon have faced severe financial issues, racking up debt of over 175 million euros. The club was relegated to Ligue 2 by the French Football Federation, but managed to stay in the division after an appeal.
