Premier League Royalty: The 10 Greatest Team’s The League Has Ever Seen

The Premier League is home to some of the world’s biggest clubs. Widely regarded as the best professional league in the world, the English top-flight has seen everything from dominating season’s to all-time great fairy tales.

In this piece we will be looking at the ten best teams to ever grace the Premier League and what they accomplished.

Leicester City - 2015/16

Claudio Ranieri’s side solidified themselves as all-time greats when they defied the odds and secured a first-ever Premier League title.

Having finished 14th the season prior, Leicester City were expected to have another season languishing in the bottom half of the table.

A flying start to the campaign was viewed by many fans as a purple patch and the Foxes would come back to reality at some stage after Christmas.

However, this was only the beginning for a Leicester side led by standouts such as Jamie Vardy, N’Golo Kane and Riyad Mahrez, who won PFA Players’ Player of the Year.

Leicester City ended the season with 81 points, securing the title with two games to spare following Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to beat Chelsea.

The Foxes ended the season with 23 wins, 12 draws and just three losses.

Their accomplishment is regarded as one of the greatest underdog stories in sports, having begun the season with 5,000-1 odds to win the league.

Chelsea 2004/05

Before the 2004/05 season had even begun, the spotlight was placed on Chelsea following the appointment of Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho.

The ‘special one’ had guided Porto to six trophies including the UEFA Champions League before his arrival at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho continued his winning ways in England, winning the Premier League title in his debut campaign.

While securing a Premier League title is a major achievement, the way in which Chelsea won the league was something that hasn’t been replicated since.

The Blues amassed a points total of 95 points, conceding just 15 times across the entire season, thanks to Mourinho’s tactical knowledge and standout performances from John Terry, Ricardo Carvahlo, William Gallas, Claude Makelele and Petr Cech.

The 2004/05 Chelsea team is widely regarded as the greatest defensive display in Premier League history.

Manchester City 2017/18

Manchester City became the first ever Premier League team to reach 100 points in a single season in 2017/18.

With 32 wins, four draws and two losses, Pep Guardiola’s side secured a third title in club history.

Nicknamed the ‘Centurions’, Manchester City broke and set a number of records during the campaign.

These records included most points accumulated (100), most goals scored (106), total wins achieved (32), largest winning margin (19 points), largest goal difference (+79), away games won in a season (16).

Arsenal 2003/04

Potentially the most iconic team to grace the Premier League. Arsenal’s 2003/04 team remain the only side that have been crowned champions without losing a single game across the season.

The ‘Invincibles’ came into the season with something to prove having finished second the season prior, despite having an eight point advantage over Manchester United.

Led by captain Patrick Vieria and Thierry Henry, who scored 30 goals during the campaign, Arsenal secured the Premier League title with four games to spare.

The Gunners would be crowned champions at White Hart Lane in April, following a 2-2 draw with local rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

While teams have come close to matching Arsenal’s season, no one has managed to match the Gunners and lift a golden Premier League trophy after 38 games.

Manchester United 1998/99

The first ever English side to complete the treble, Manchester United’s 1998/99 team has gone down in history as the pinnacle of success.

Having failed to lose a single game from Christmas until the end of the season, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side added to their impressive campaign by defeating Newcastle United in the FA Cup final.

The Red Devils reached the final thanks to a 109th minute goal from Ryan Giggs in the semi final against Arsenal.

The late comebacks wouldn’t stop there for Manchester United as clash with Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final created an iconic moment in football history.

Having been 1-0 down heading into added time, United were able to pull one back through Teddy Sherringham before Ole Gunnar Solskjær reached legend status by poking home the winner in the 93rd minute of action.

Chelsea 2016/17

Antonio Conte’s arrival in the Premier League changed the landscape of the league for years to come.

The Italian had already proven to be a success in Italy winning three Serie A titles with Juventus but looked to add a Premier League medal to his collection with Chelsea.

The Blues had finished in 10th position the following campaign and would find themselves in the same position after six games under the new manager.

However, Chelsea would come to form as the season progressed, losing just three more games across the campaign to become Premier League champions.

Despite winning the title, it’s the way in which Chelsea achieved the accomplishment that sticks out to many.

The use of a 3-4-3 formation wasn’t common amongst Premier League sides until Conte adapted the formation to spring Chelsea to life.

The likes of Victor Moses and David Luiz became unlikely hero’s thanks to the new approach while a front three of Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Pedro flourished.

Manchester United 2007/08

The Premier League and UEFA Champions League winners are one of the standout sides during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign at Manchester United.

Having failed to win any of their first three fixtures, the Red Devils went on to win their next eight consecutive matches.

Manchester United would lose just five matches across the season, amassing a total of 87 points - scoring 80 goals and conceding just 22 times.

On the European level, United completed an almost perfect UEFA Champions League campaign, avoiding defeat across the entire competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s impact on the team’s success was a major talking point as the Portuguese forward secured his first Ballon d’Or award - scoring 42 goals in all competitions.

Liverpool 2019/20

COVID-19 turned the 2019/20 season into something the footballing world has never experienced before.

All leagues shut down in the middle of the season, resuming months later, fans not allowed in the stadium. However, Liverpool were able to battle through all obstacles and win their first top-flight title since 1990.

The suspension of the season didn’t affect the Red’s form upon its return, winning the title with a record seven games remaining.

However, Liverpool did fail to break the 100 points mark that they were on course to achieve before the pandemic, losing two of their final seven matches.

Manchester City 2022/23

The year Manchester City finally achieved what they had sat out to do years ago.

Despite already having two consecutive Premier League titles, Pep Guardiola’s side were able to go a step further by completing the treble - winning the league, FA Cup and a first-ever UEFA Champions League.

Manchester City was able to squeeze past Arsenal to secure their third straight Premier League crown, amassing 89 points compared to the Gunners’ 84.

Erling Haaland was the standout performer for the Citizens, setting a record for the most goals in a single Premier League campaign with 36 (52 in all competitions).

City were able to secure the title thanks to a 12 game winning streak from the 25th February until 21st May.

Outside of the Premier League, Manchester City also became the second English club to complete the illustrious treble, beating Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League final and Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final.

Liverpool 2024/25

The most recent Premier League champions made light work of the competition, finishing ten points ahead of runners-up Arsenal.

Liverpool would register just one defeat in their first 30 matches of the campaign, securing the title with four games remaining following a 5-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur in April.

The 2024/25 season was the first in charge for Arne Slot having replaced Jurgen Klopp. Slot would become the seventh manager in history to win the Premier League in his debut.

Mohamed Salah was the standout performer for Liverpool, registering 29 goals and 18 assists.
