Game Week 6 League Two Preview

Game Week 6 League Two Team to Watch - Bradford

Since Graham Alexander has arrived, it’s felt like the Bantams are a real threat in the division, something which hasn’t been the case for a long time. Alexander and Bradford feel like a great fit; he has the necessary credentials, but also character, to be able to handle the expectant fanbase in Yorkshire. Since his appointment in November of 2023, only MK Dons and Doncaster have picked up more points in League Two than Bradford, and he took them to within an inch of reaching the playoffs last season. That seems well within their grasp this term, with experienced forward Andy Cook back to his talismanic best; the 33 year old has 3 goals in 5 games so far this campaign.

They travel to Walsall, who had been in imperious form before last weekend. It feels like a good time for the Bantams to travel to the West Midlands; Alexander will be looking to dent the Saddlers even further.

Game Week 6 League Two Player to Watch - David McGoldrick

It felt inevitable that the man known as ‘Didzy’ would eventually feature here. Despite being 36 years old, McGoldrick is experiencing something of an ‘Indian Summer’, putting in quality performances which belie his years. McGoldrick has found the net on four occasions in his last two games, none of which have been run of the mill goals. His brace against Swindon was arguably topped by his opener against Accrginton, with all three of those goals curling efforts which found the top corner.

Notts have been without their talismanic forward Alassana Jatta, and yet his absence hasn’t truly been felt due to McGoldrick really stepping up. This weekend Notts travel to Bromley, where the pair have only ever seen close games. In fact, Notts are yet to win at Hayes Lane in four attempts, losing by one goal on three occasions, and drawing the other. They may need a player of McGoldrick’s calibre to step up and provide a moment of magic to finally triumph in the capital.

Game Week 6 League Two Hot Prospect - Benicio Baker-Boaitey

On loan from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, Baker-Boaitey has really impressed so far for Port Vale, in a side who aren’t short of attacking options. In fact, he’s forced his way into the side, ahead of seasoned EFL operators, such as Ronan Curtis, and big summer signings, such as Ruari Paton; he’s made a good start to life in the Potteries. Whilst you could argue that Baker-Boaitey’s play is slightly predictable, he has quality that allows him to execute actions, even if the defender knows exactly what he is going to do.

When deployed down the right, it’s clear he will cut back on his left, and attempt to curl a cross in from the corner of the box; that doesn’t help defenders stop him though. Likewise, on the left he looks to get down the outside, but his quick and tricky feet make him a nightmare to defend against; he completed the most dribbles, and was the most fouled player in Port Vale’s last game. This weekend they host Chesterfield, in what’s likely to be a high quality game; Baker-Boaitey won’t look out of place, despite being just 20.

Game Week 6 League Two Game of the Week - AFC Wimbledon v MK Dons

In terms of game of the week, there really could only be one option in League Two. In fact, you could argue that this game is the biggest in the entire Fourth Tier calendar, and is likely to be one of the most fiercely contested too. There is not a lot of love lost between the sides, due to the long and complex history that surrounds the decision to move Wimbledon to Milton Keynes. And whilst we won’t attempt to summarise that history here, it is important to note that the bad blood between the sides certainly plays a part in making this the fixture it is.

There was a dramatic late winner last time these sides met, for Wimbledon, fitting of the nature of this clash. And the home side head into this one in a better position, three points above their adversaries, having played a game less. But MK Dons do seem to have turned a corner, and with both sides boasting extremely strong squads, this not only promises to be a feisty affair, but a high quality one too.
