Ex-EFL Gem Stuns the Premier League With a Match-Winning Masterclass

On Sunday in the Premier League we were treated to five gripping games with teams at both ends of the table in action. Arsenal were able to extend their gap at the top of the table to four points after beating Crystal Palace at the expense of Manchester City failing to beat Aston Villa.

Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth continue to impress as they defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0, keeping them hot on the Gunners heels in 2nd place. Spurs climbed to 3rd after beating Everton convincingly 0-3 in the late afternoon kick-off. The match that brought the most drama however was at Molineux, as Wolves welcomed a Burnley side with their tails up after beating Leeds last time out.

One player for the home side really stood out in the game and could be one of their key player this season if they are to remain in the English top-flight.

The Clarets Last-Gasp Winner

Underwhelming Wolves had managed just two draws in eight league games before Sunday's game with Scott Parker's Burnley. The visitors had beaten Leeds United 2-0 last weekend after Loum Tchaouna's goal of the season contender secured the win.

The match in the West Midlands felt like a real chance for Wolves to kickstart their season. After going a goal behind in the 14th minute, those ambitions soon faded. They began evaporating further after they'd go two down on the half-hour mark. Wolves did show real character to get back on level terms through Jorgen Strand Larsen's penalty and then Marshall Munetsi's first-half stoppage time strike.

But despite their efforts in the second period, they couldn't hold off a determined Burnley side looking to get their first win on the road this season. They did exactly that, thanks to a 95th minute winner from Lyle Foster after the South African was introduced from the bench in the second-half.

Questions were raised once more at the full-time whistle around Wolves manager Vito Pereira's future. The Portuguese could be seen arguing with home fans in the stands immediately after the match had finished.

Pereira's situation is definitely one that should be followed closely after the Wolves boss only signed a new deal last month, committing his future to the club for three more years. Club Chairman, Jeff Shi has insisted that Pereira can steer his side to safety like he did last season, after they sat in 19th place when he was appointed last December.

Burnley's Dutchman at the Double

Former Millwall star Zian Flemming scored a brace that sent Burnley on their way to victory on Sunday. The striker's two goals were his first in the top flight and proved crucial for the away side.

The Dutchman showed his finishing ability with the first goal, after cushioning a superb long field ball from Quilindschy Hartman into the corner of the Wolves net. He took all the pace off the ball, opting for accuracy and it was a really clever finish made to look easy.

His second strike was all about his clever movement in the area. As the Wolves defender was caught ball watching, Burnley's No.19 was rushing into the box to anticipate Hartman's first-time cross. He proved too strong for Bueno shrugging the Wolves centre-back off with ease, before finishing emphatically.

Whilst it's the striker's first cameo in the top-flight, many have been well aware of his quality during his time spent in the Championship. His ability to play in a two up front or behind the striker in the past makes him adaptable and a real asset to Scott Parker's squad.

Flemming's Rise In English Football

After making a name for himself in his homeland of the Netherlands, the 27-year-old would make the switch to Championship side Millwall from Fortuna Sittard for €2.5M in 2022.

His time at The Den was an overriding success, finishing 8th in 2022/23 narrowly missing out on the Championship play-offs that season. The striker would be voted the Supporters Player of the Year after scoring 15 league goals in 43 appearances for the Lions.

In the Dutch forward's second season in South-East London, he scored 7 times and provided 5 assists in the Championship. His side finished 13th place and despite the drop off in goals, he sparked interest from Burnley upon their relegation to the second division.

The Clarets signed Flemming on an initial season-long loan with an obligation to buy. Despite a hamstring injury that kept the new signing out for the start of last season, he'd still notch 12 goals in 35 Championship appearances, with those goals proving vital amidst Burnley's instant return to the Premier League.

His goal return more than impressed boss Scott Parker and the Lancashire club made the deal permanent for the £7M fee agreed with Millwall in the summer prior. If the talented striker can keep his fitness this season, it bodes well for the newly promoted side in their bid for Premier League survival, despite the odds being against them at the beginning of the campaign.
