Hope They Kept The Receipt... Is Liverpool's Title Charge Over Despite Summer Spree?

Last season's Premier League Champions are currently having a season that no one expected. Pulling off the dream summer transfer window of many fans, and with a squad loaded with an array of talent, the majority of the footballing world thought that Liverpool would bring home a consecutive Premier League title at the start of a dynasty in the northeastof England. However, this dream might already be over.

Going into the November international break, Liverpool find themselves 8th, already eight points behind league leaders Arsenal. After breaking the Premier League record transfer fee TWICE in the same summer, for both Florian Wirtz and then Alexander Isak, Slot's men are miles below the expected level. The question is, is this down to the new men brought in not being up to scratch, or has Slot been found out? Liverpool may already be out of the Premier League title race!

Summer Spending Splash

Liverpool spent close to half a billion pounds in the summer transfer window, bringing in several high-profile names, from Florian Wirtz to Jeremie Frimpong to Alexander Isak, all of whom were expected to come into the side and improve it... this hasn't happened as of yet.

The only signing that has shown some real class is Hugo Ekitike, who has quickly become a fan favourite after his arrival from Frankfurt in July. He has scored several goals so far this season and looks to be a certain starter going forward.

The same can't be said about Florian Wirtz, who is still yet to score a single goal for the Reds. The £116 million move from Leverkusen looked to be a huge coup for Liverpool, as Florian Wirtz has been one of the most exciting talents in world football for the last few years; however, the 22-year-old is yet to hit the same heights, and many have asked questions on whether he is good enough for the Premier League.

A signing like this, among all the others, comes with an expectation that Liverpool will be at the top of the league throughout the season; it isn't a desire, it's a need. So far, they haven't even looked close to achieving this, and if it doesn't start to click soon, Liverpool can kiss their title defence goodbye.

Too Many Losses Too Soon?

Liverpool have already lost more games in the Premier League this season than in the whole of their title-winning campaign - we are only 11 games into the season.

Form like this comes at a cost, and with Arsenal's almost perfect start, Liverpool now have a one-in-a-million chance to claw the points back and find their way to the top of the table. The recent 3-0 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad confirmed Liverpool's sorry status for all to see.

If Liverpool had got a result from this game, then maybe that could have been the start of the comeback, but such a heavy defeat in a game that they got dominated in proves to everyone that they just aren't good enough right now to be title challengers. A change of tactics seems more than needed if Arne Slot wants to not only get back on track as best as his side can but also to protect his own job, as with every loss, more and more people start to question how much longer the Dutchman needs to turn things around.

I think he deserves the chance to steady the ship due to his unbelievable first season in the job; however, if it gets to January and things are still looking grim at Liverpool, then a search for another manager may be needed. First, Slot needs to adapt his system to be able to A, get the most out of each of his players, and B, be able to use his big money signings in the same team. You can't be having 130 million pound Alexander Isak on the bench every week because of Ekitike.

Liverpool may turn their focus to the UEFA Champions League, as they will have a much higher chance of progressing into the deeper stages of the tournament than they would have if also focused on Premier League glory. Liverpool are in a good place in the Champions League following their win vs Real Madrid; they may want to put more focus into this tournament if they want to end the season with some major silverware.

One thing that cannot be questioned is that Arne Slot needs to win as many games as possible from now until the end of the season - zero losses from here on out is the only way they can become genuine contenders again.

They would certainly have to beat both Arsenal and Man City when the reverse fixtures come around. This is a massive 'if', and it seems that Liverpool will have to chalk this season down as a 'transition period'. However, now is the time that things should start to click between the new signings and established Liverpool players, and if that doesn't happen very soon, then it could be a very dark season for Liverpool Football Club.

It seems the dream of a consecutive Premier League title is over at Anfield; it would take so much outside of their control going in their favour, as well as turning around their own terrible form. Change is needed on the pitch at Liverpool, or this could be one of the worst title defences in Premier League history.
