Liverpool Fans Fume About Transfer Inactivity

There is just over a month until the transfer window closes and the Premier League season is almost here. For many of us, that is cause for excitement and anticipation, however some Liverpool fans are dreading the opening weekend, as they look set to line up the same way they ended last season.

So far in the summer transfer window, the Reds have signed no one and lost Joel Matip and Thaigo Alcantara, both without receiving a single penny. They also haven’t been very active either, just showing interest in some players without making an actual approach.

Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori was one of their main targets, but he has a medical booked with Arsenal after a long drawn out transfer saga. They have also looked at the possibility of signing Euros star Dani Olmo, but Barcelona and Bayern Munich are sniffing around too, so they’ll be in for a big fight if they want to secure his signature.

Most recently sporting director Richard Hughes has shown an interest in Juventus youngster Dean Huijsen, however he has a medical booked with Hughes’ former club Bournemouth.

This inactivity, combined with manager Arne Slot’s tight-lipped approach to his team’s transfer strategy has led some Liverpool fans to vent their frustrations online. Most of the anger has been directed towards Liverpool's owners but some are also not happy with Hughes or Slot.

One fan made an unfair comparison, saying that Liverpool were being run like Bournemouth. The Cherries are about to make their fifth signing of the summer and have made some excellent acquisitions over the last few years, with the likes of Illya Zabarnyi, Milos Kerkez and Justin Kluivert all joining since the new ownership group took charge nearly two years ago.

What do Liverpool need?

Liverpool will most likely need to sign at least a defender and a midfielder before the transfer window closes, and possibly another goalkeeper too, should Coaimhim Kelleher leave. Matip was an excellent servant to the club, and his departure will leave a hole in the Liverpool squad. While Jarell Quansah is probably ready to deputise behind Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, should one get an injury or a suspension, then the squad depth will no longer look satisfactory.

In midfield, the deepest position has been filled by Wataru Endo and Alexis MacAllister but neither of them is a long term solution to the hole left by Fabinho last year. Endo was actually Liverpool’s third choice after they missed out on both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea. MacAllister is better in a more attacking position and Endo, despite performing well last season, isn’t a Liverpool quality player.

The post-Klopp era on Merseyside has just begun, and so far it doesn’t look too promising.
