Terrific Tynesider's Outwit Londoner’s with Late Winners

Saturday’s 3:30 kick-offs both brought plenty of late drama, and curiously, both games went in favour of Tyneside rivals, Newcastle United and Sunderland.

Newcastle hosted Fulham in what quickly became anything but straightforward, while Sunderland had the unenviable task of visiting reigning world champions Chelsea, who had won their last four prior to today’s game.

However, both managed to scrape all three points thanks to winners in the dying moments, securing victory, and in Sunderland's case, second place in the Premier League table. Bet none of you predicted that at the start of the season!

Sunderland Outsmart Toothless Chelsea

The Black Cats arrived at Stamford Bridge riding a wave of confidence, having lost just one of their last six games in the league, and beating the likes of Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Wolves along the way.

Chelsea, however, posed a tall task, having beaten Ajax 5-1 in midweek, while also boasting victories over Forest and defending Premier League champions Liverpool, making the Blues overwhelming favourites.

Four minutes in, it was easy to see why, as summer signing Alejandro Garnacho opened his account for the London club with a fizzing low drive that went more through Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs than around him.

However, we have seen frequently that the away side are not easily disheartened, and they responded admirably, forcing an equaliser from a long throw through Wilson Isidor just 18 minutes later, and the visitors would keep their foot on the gas all the way into halftime, forcing the Chelsea defence into some rushed defending.

Starting the second half brightly, Sunderland had a number of half-chances to put themselves ahead, but growing into the game, Chelsea pushed them back, and were comfortably on top going into the last 10 minutes. However, their search for a goal came back to bite them.

Committing too many men to the attack, Chelsea found themselves a man short when a Sunderland clearance was smashed down the other end to Brian Brobbey, Isidor’s replacement. Keeping calm and taking his time, Brobbey weighted the perfect pass into Chemsdine Talbi, and with a lovely first-time strike, the Moroccan sealed a superb away victory for the Black Cats.

Talbi’s winner was clocked at 90+3, the fourth goal Sunderland have scored in second-half overtime this season, and undoubtedly the most vital. Capable of both sitting deep and breaking out at a rapid pace, Regis Le Bris’ men look like the real deal this season. The win puts them a stunning second in the table, and, as a Chelsea fan, I can now speak from experience when I say underestimate them at your peril.

Newcastle Get There In The End

At the other end of the country, Newcastle hosted another London club in Fulham - both sides have started slowly, made even more disappointing by the lofty ambitions both outfits harboured at the start of the season, and a win for either side would have the potential to provide a launchpad for their respective season.

In this game too things got going pretty quickly, as Jacob Murphy’s powerful strike on the 18-minute mark found its way into the net off the post, handing the Toon a 1-0 lead.

However, even before the opening goal, Fulham were having a lot of joy on the counter-attack and repeatedly threatened to either take the lead themselves or level things up, something they eventually managed 10 minutes into the second half.

Record signing Kevin, who signed on the dotted line at Craven Cottage for a fee worth over £34 million, whipped a delicious ball into the six-yard box, and although Jimenez could only connect with the crossbar the first time round, Sasa Lukic made no such mistake the second time round.

The game was set up for a grandstand finish, and both sides had chances to win it - Jimenez saw his acrobatic effort smartly saved by Nick Pope, while Bruno Guimaraes missed a host of excellent openings, forcing Magpies fans to start wondering if it was just one of those days.

However, eventually, Guimaraes allayed those fears with the ultimate redemption arc, following up on William Osula’s shot to slot into a virtually open goal in the 90th minute of play. That’s what I call leaving it until the last minute.

The result sees Newcastle move up to 11th in the table, and remarkably, it was just the third league game this season in which Eddie Howe’s men had found the net more than once in a game.

The goals have not exactly been flowing at St James’ Park this season, but if they come in such a manner as this, I’m fairly sure that the Toon faithful will have little problem with that.
