Transfer Latest as Liverpool and Man City Make Moves
The 2025 summer transfer window has already thrown up some blockbuster deals - and it’s only June.
With the early window closing on June 10 and reopening on Monday, Premier League clubs have wasted no time in getting their business done. Liverpool and Manchester City, in particular, have been at the centre of the action, as both look to strengthen ahead of what promises to be another fiercely competitive season.
Liverpool have made serious statements of intent this summer.
The biggest headline-grabber is undoubtedly the pending capture of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds are inches away from signing Wirtz for a whopping £116m fee, which includes a guaranteed £100m and £16m in add-ons.
Creative, intelligent, and mature beyond his years, Wirtz looks tailor-made for Liverpool’s evolving midfield. His addition in the middle of the park with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis MacAllister, and Ryan Gravenberch will be frightening for opponents.
Defensively, Liverpool have also bolstered their back line with the signing of Jeremie Frimpong, also from Leverkusen, for £29.5m. The attacking right-back brings pace, energy and versatility - though his arrival comes as Trent Alexander-Arnold departs for Real Madrid in a controversial £10m move.
The Scouser's exit marks the end of an era, but Frimpong’s attacking style means the club may not miss Trent as much as once thought.
In goal, Liverpool have acted decisively too. Georgian shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili joins from Valencia for £29m, while impressive second-choice Caoimhin Kelleher departs for Brentford in an £18m deal. Mamardashvili, highly rated for his shot-stopping and composure, will provide healthy competition for Alisson as he aims to become the Brazilian’s eventual successor.
Over at the Etihad, Manchester City are quietly refreshing their squad - once all-conquering but recently displaced from the top.
The most emotional moment of their summer so far has been the release of club legend Kevin De Bruyne. After nearly a decade of service, the Belgian leaves behind an enormous legacy, but his departure opens up space for a new generation to step up.
City have been typically proactive. Tijjani Reijnders arrives from AC Milan for £46.3m, bringing his high-quality passing game that should slot perfectly into Guardiola’s possession-heavy system. In attack, highly rated French talent Rayan Cherki joins from Lyon for £34m, offering flair and unpredictability.
City have also addressed their defence, securing Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves for £36.3m. The Algerian full-back provides cover and competition on the left, which is particularly important as City manage the fitness of Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake over a long season. Goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli has arrived on an undisclosed deal from Chelsea to reinforce the back-up options.
Elsewhere in Manchester, United have made a significant early splash by signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m. The Brazilian forward adds versatility to United's attack and could operate either centrally or from wide positions.
With Jadon Sancho returning from his loan spell at Chelsea, United's forward options are beginning to look a little deeper heading into pre-season.
Several experienced names have exited Old Trafford, including Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelof, as Ruben Amorim looks to build his own identity within the squad.
A number of other Premier League sides have quietly gone about their business:
With the second part of the summer transfer period opening this Monday, June 16, football fans - or at least the neutral ones - will be hoping for a similarly intriguing window across the next few months.
