By far the biggest game of the Bundesliga season so far, Bayer Leverkusen know that nothing but a win will do against league leaders Bayern Munich. Eight points behind them, the home side know that if the gap extends to 11 points, the title race is as good as over.
Bayern achieved maximum points in the league since an early December defeat to Mainz, and Leverkusen, drawing from last season's invincible form, have only dropped four points in that time.
However, they have to ensure they win the three points by any means necessary here, as a gap of five points suddenly becomes a lot more manageable than eight or 11.
As a potentially title deciding game draws near, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.
Bayer Leverkusen Predicted Lineup (3-4-2-1): Lukas Hradecky (GK); Piero Hincapie, Jonathan Tah, Nordi Mukiele; Alex Grimaldo, Aleix Garcia, Granit Xhaka, Jeremie Frimpong; Florian Wirtz; Victor Boniface, Patrik Schick.
Ahead of the biggest game of their season so far, Leverkusen couldn’t be in much better form coming into the game. They haven’t suffered a defeat in the league since August, and their only losses since then have come against some of the Champions League’s most illustrious opponents.
Xabi Alonso’s side also beat Bayern in the DFB Pokal in December, a morale boosting victory which will have given his side belief that they can reduce the deficit between the two sides come Saturday.
However, they know it will be a tough job. Bayern are in title-winning form at the moment, and when looking at the quality and depth of their squad, it looks like Leverkusen will have to put in a monumental shift in order to derail the runaway Munich train.
Bayern Munich Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Manuel Neuer (GK); Raphael Guerreiro, Min-Jae Kim, Dayot Upamecano, Sacha Boey; Aleksander Pavlovic, Joshua Kimmich; Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise; Harry Kane.
After Leverkusen’s uncontested parade to the title last season, Bayern Munich must have been angry at their capitulation, one which stopped them having any say in the title race. And this season, it seems they are back with a vengeance.
With Harry Kane in even better form this season than last, and a number of the young guns becoming established starters and certified Bundesliga ballers, Vincent Kompany has transitioned to life at the top of the game superbly.
While he will know his side boast a negative recent record against Leverkusen, this game will mean a lot to his side, as after such a poor showing in the league last campaign, they will be burning to get their hands on the league title once more, a one year hiatus too long for a club so accustomed to success.
Recent meetings:
Both sides are so closely matched, both in terms of quality on the pitch, and going off recent form. This game probably has an equal chance of Bayern or Leverkusen winning and a draw.
However, Leverkusen have the home advantage, and given they are playing to stay in a title rac, they have just that little more incentive than Bayern to pick up all three points here.
Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 Bayern Munich
One thing is certain; there won’t be any downtime in this match. Both teams like to run their opposition ragged, and if both stick with the same tactics here, then it will be a open game with end to end action throughout.
