Charlton Athletic vs Wrexham Prediction

League One’s Saturday actions see’s Charlton Athletic tasked with the tricky prospect of bringing Wrexham down to earth, after the Hollywood owned club’s start to the season has seen them climb to second in the division.

Many expected League One to be too much of a challenge for Phil Parkinson’s promoted side, but they have thrived using a committed approach to the counter attack, a strategy that has seen them win seven out of eleven league games so far.

Charlton have had a relatively unspectacular start, and currently sit 11th in the table, though they occupied third for a couple of weeks at the start of the season.

As the game approaches, here is everything you need to know about both sides ahead of kick-off.

Key Statistics

  • Wrexham have the second lowest figure for ball possession, on average in control of it just 43% of the time.
  • Wrexham right-back Ryan Barnett has the joint most assists in the league with 5.
  • Charlton center back Lloyd Jones is averaging a rating 7.46 a game, the fourth highest figure in League One.
  • Despite this figure, Charlton have won just one of their last six league games, though they beat top of the table Birmingham in that victory.

Charlton Athletic Preview

Charlton Athletic Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): William Mannion (GK); Josh Edwards, Macaulay Gillesphey, Alex Mitchell, Rarmani Edmonds-Green; Terry Taylor, Greg Docherty; Tyreece Campell, Allan Campbell, Karoy Anderson; Matt Godden.

Charlton have certainly had an up and down start to the season. After winning four of their first six games of the season, they found themselves comfortably in the promotion spots.

However, draws to Rotherham, Stockport County and Barnsley, and three consecutive defeats to Blackpool, Stevenage and Bristol Rovers respectively forced them down the rankings and into upper mid-table.

However, their win against Birmingham City, the overwhelming favorites to win the league, was a huge positive, and will have given them the morale boost they need to head into the match with Wrexham with the hope of coming away with a result. They will need to be at the top of their game, but Wrexham have shown that they can collapse when things don’t go to plan.

Wrexham Preview

Wrexham Predicted Lineup (5-3-2): Arthur Okonkwo; James McClean, Thomas O’Connor, Dan Scarr, Eoghan O’Connell, Ryan Barnett; Elliot Lee, George Dobson, Andy Cannon; Jack Marriott, Ollie Palmer.

Wrexham have taken League One by storm so far this season. As previously mentioned, they have adopted the unusual strategy of forgoing possession of the ball, instead employing a high press and forcing opponents into giving the ball away in dangerous areas.

Given their league position, it is safe to say it has been affected, but there is little margin for error. They led away to Birmingham, before being outgunned by their quality, conceding three goals in 40 minutes to fall to their first defeat of the season, while they also lost 1-0 to Accrington Stanley.

However, poor performances are very much the exception rather than the rule, and Phil Parkinson will hope his side take advantage of playing a mid-table side in order to consolidate their position in the top two.

Their most recent game, a scoreless draw with Huddersfield, saw them fall four points back from Birmingham, who also have a game in hand. Wrexham will be desperate for all three points here to stay in touch with the league leaders.

Charlton Athletic vs Wrexham Head to Head

Charlton and Wrexham have never played in each other in the combined 279 year history, meaning this is a groundbreaking fixture, and one of the few head-to-heads in the football league that has no history at all.

Charlton Athletic vs Wrexham Betting Tip

Given the fact that this fixture has never been played in a competitive context before, there really is room for anything to happen.

Bookies are making Wrexham favorites for this one, and rightly so, but everything about this fixture is unpredictable, and we expect the same with the result.

We are backing Charlton Athletic to pick up a shock win to surge up the table towards the play-off spots. However, the game could just as easily swing the other way.

Charlton Athletic vs Wrexham Final Prediction

Charlton 2-0 Wrexham

Wrexham’s counter attacking tactics have worked wonders so far this season, but for one reason or another, Charlton don’t strike me as a side that will allow them to play this way.

They will attempt to smother them, something only Birmingham have really managed to do this season, and if they can command possession of the ball, chances will open up if they are adventurous enough.
