Blackburn Rovers head to Edgeley Park to take on Stockport County in the opening round of the EFL League Cup. Seeing is neither side is in the Premier League, they will have to compete from the very first fixtures to try and see if they have what it takes to lift the trophy come the end of the competition.
Stockport started their League One campaign off strong with a 2-0 win at home against Cambridge United over the weekend. That result sees them sat in second due to alphabetical reasons as Huddersfield also won with the same goal difference. They are in flying form which has continued from gaining automatic promotion out of League Two after 46 gruelling matches, leaving the league as champions. A four point gap to second placed Wrexham the difference.
During the summer break The Hatters played a total of three pre-season friendlies in which they won once and lost twice. What is coincidental though is that one of the teams they played is the team that they will face in this EFL League Cup match, Blackburn.
That match ended in a 0-1 loss, but they will take some positives from that. They now have recent experience against this side and they can fine tune their training and match approach to try and combat the attack of Rovers and have a go and flip that game’s result on it’s head.
Blackburn had the honours of playing the very first game in the 2024/25 Championship season last Friday and they won in style, defeating Derby County in a 4-2 spectacle. They will look to put what a terrible season they had last year behind them as they escaped relegation by just three points, finishing in 19th place.
The aforementioned pre-season friendly game against Stockport was just one of seven that The Riversiders played. Three wins, two losses and two draws was the tally at the end of it all, including an impressive 3-8 win away to Tranmere. Not including those friendlies, Blackburn are undefeated in their last six away matches and haven’t lost in their last seven.
They have a gem of a midfielder in Sammie Szmodics whose versatility can see him play on the wing or up top. He might as well be a striker though as he ended last season as the Championship’s Golden Boot winner after netting 27 times, six goals clear of second placed Adam Armstrong of Southampton. He will be a key player in this match for Blackburn in their attempt to come out victorious.
Our betting experts have gone with Blackburn Rovers To Win. They can’t see Stockport causing an upset as Blackburn looked very effective in their pre-season clash against each other. Blackburn should come out winners between the two again, this time in the EFL League Cup.
