The Bundesliga has provided us with plenty of excitement this season already, and that doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon as this weekend sees Werder Bremen host Mainz in what promises to be an intriguing contest. The two teams are within four points of each other and are both battling for a European place.
Werder Bremen need to turn their recent form around, as they have earnt just two points from a possible 12. Their last win came before the winter break as they beat Union Berlin 4-1 at home. Since then they have played Leipzig, Heidenheim, Augsburg and Dortmund and their fans would have been hoping for at least two wins from these matches.
Mainz’s form has stalled a little bit as of late as well. They won their most recent match against Stuttgart, but prior to that they lost to both Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin. They are currently in sixth in the table but are a single point off the Champions League places.
Werder Bremen Predicted Lineup - Michael Zetterer; Anthony Jung, Marco Friedl, Milos Veljkovic; Senne Lynen; Romano Schmid, Jens Stage, Derrick Kohn, Mitchell Weiser; Marvin Ducksch, Marco Grull
Werder Bremen are in the middle of a whole host of teams that will be fighting for one or two European spots come the end of the season. They are currently in ninth on 27 points alongside Borussia Monchengladbach and FC Freiburg. Their goal scoring this season has been impressive, with the likes of Mitchell Weiser and Marvin Ducksch having scored or assisted eight and 13 goals respectively, however their defensive record is one of the worst in the league outside of the bottom two. They play with three at the back, so sometimes their wingbacks get caught out defensively.
Mainz Predicted Lineup - Robin Zentner; Dominik Kohr, Stefan Bell, Danny da Costa; Phillipp Mwene, Nadiem Amiri, Kaishu Sano, Anthony Caci; Lee Jae-sung, Paul Nebel; Nelson Weiper
Mainz will be without their main man Jonathan Burkardt in this match after he was withdrawn just three minutes into their loss against Bayer Leverkusen a couple of weeks ago with an injury. He hasn’t played since then and the 24-year-old will most likely miss this game too. He has scored 12 times this season from just 16 appearances.
Instead Mainz will be relying on 19-year-old Nelson Weiper to lead the line. He scored his first goal of the season last time out against Stuttgart, having not scored in the top flight for two years. Lee Jae-sung will also be a big part of the attack, having scored five goals this season.
These two sides have faced each other a lot in recent history and Werder Bremen tend to do the better of them. They have already played each other this season, and Bremen managed to get the better of Mainz despite being away from home. Bremen’s record against Mainz is surprising considering that they were in the second tier of German football as recently as 2022.
15th Sep 2024 - Mainz 1-2 Werder Bremen - Bundesliga
3rd Feb 2024 - Mainz 0-1 Werder Bremen - Bundesliga
2nd Sep 2023 - Werder Bremen 4-0 Mainz - Bundesliga
8th Apr 2023 - Mainz 2-2 Werder Bremen - Bundesliga
15th Oct 2022 - Werder Bremen 0-2 Mainz - Bundesliga
Both sides have had a bit of a dip in form recently, so this match could be quite close. Without their main goalscorer, Mainz haven’t struggled to score too much, as the rest of the team have stepped up, and given Bremen’s defensive record, I doubt that they will struggle to find the back of the net in this game either. Mainz’s away record this season is pretty good as well, so the home advantage that Bremen has won’t count for much.
With all of this in mind, our team of professional experts have decided that the best tip for this game is for Mainz to Win. Odds of 9/5 on CopyBet means that a £10 bet could see a potential return of £28.20.
(odds subject to change)
