English Clubs Submit Squads for Europe: Who's In and Who's Out?

As the Broadway show that is European football is edging ever closing to raising its opening curtain for yet another engrossing season, we are starting to get a better idea of how each side will go about making the most of their European journey.

Newcastle United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Spurs, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace have all had to register their squads for the opening stage of UEFA's competitions this week as the ready themselves for a taxing season of European football.

So, before all the madness begins, let's take a look at the squads. Who has made the cut? Who has been left out? And are there any surprises?

Newcastle United

Newcastle United are readying themselves for a second Champions League campaign in three years and face some massive fixtures such as Barcelona at home on the opening day, and a repeat of the controversial game in 2023 against PSG at the Parc Des Princes.

Despite early shortcomings, Newcastle's transfer window ended up being a positive one with upgrades and reinforcements brought in for all the positions needed.

The Champions League squad sees all of those signings included in the 'A list' with Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade, Aaron Ramsey, Aaron Ramsdale, Anthony Elanga and Malick Thiaw being those new names.

Those signings are joined by Captain Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, Nick Pope, Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier, Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento, Dan Burn, Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar and William Osula- all of which were involved in the squad which so devastatingly missed out on making it out of the group of death just two years ago.

A couple of notable names are missing from that A list in local lad midfielder Lewis Miley and left back starlet Lewis Hall, however, due to their age and status as club-trained players, they are both eligible for the B list and don't need to be registered to allow them to play in the competition.

Liverpool

The Premier League Champions continue their status as a mainstay in UEFA's elite competition and will be looking to build on what ended up being a disappointing campaign last season, which ended with a penalty defeat in the round of 16 against eventual winners PSG.

This summer has been an exceptional one, one that has made other clubs fans quite jealous in fact, with Liverpool breaking the British transfer record not once, but twice in an unbelievable summer.

This is reflected in their Champions League squad with Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Giorgi Marmadashvili and Freddie Woodman all making the cut.

Joining those are the usual suspects for Arne Slot with Alisson, Joe Gomez, Endo, Van Dijk, Konate, Connor Bradley, Robertson, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, Gravenberch, Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo.

The main absence in Liverpool's squad is Federico Chiesa with the Italian missing out altogether. Instead, Slot has chosen to include youngster Rio Ngumoha who introduced himself to the world with a 90+8 winner on his debut in the Premier League.

Ngumoha would be eligible for the B list due to his age, but doesn't qualify on the club-trained front, having only joined from Chelsea teo years ago.

The B list for Liverpool includes youngsters such as Trey Nyoni, Jayden Danns, and Stefan Bajcetic.

Man City

After four Premier League titles in a row, including a Champions League win in that time, Man City had a massively underwhelming campaign in both competitions last season. City recovered their season to finish third in the Premier League but didn't even make it to the round of 16 in the Champions League.

City will be looking for redemption this season and after a window of spending to strengthen what they already had, that redemption could well be on the cards.

City's squad consists of new signings Gianluigi Donnarumma, Marcus Bettinelli, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and James Trafford.

That fresh blood is joined by more established names at the club with Stefan Ortega, Ruben Dias, John Stones, Ake, Gvardiol, Khusanov, Mateo Kovacic, Jeremy Doku, Nico Gonzalez, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Savinho, Nunes, Phil Foden and Oscar Bobb all makng Pep's 22 man squad.

The most notable names left out include Nico O'Reilly and Rico Lewis, but both of those qualify for the B list and don't need to be registered for the main squad.

Arsenal

Another second place finish for Arsenal in the Premier League, another on the list of English victims of PSG in the Champions League.

It feels like Arsenal need a trophy this season, it has been a long time coming for the red side of North London and the Champions League could well be the one they target this season.

The new signings included who are looking to stamp their mark are: Kepa, Mosquera, Piero Hincapie, Ebere Eze, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Zubimendi, and Viktor Gyokeres.

They join forces with David Raya, Saliba, Ben White, Gabriel, Jurrien Timber, Calafiori, Odegaard, Trossard, Merino, Havertz, Declan Rice Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli to form a very scary looking.

There is also a place in the A list squad for Max Dowman who, if he makes an appearance before his 16th birthday, could become the youngest player to ever appear in a Champions League game.

His inclusion comes at the expense of Gabriel Jesus however, with the Brazilian still facing a long time on the sidelines following his ACL injury last season.

Spurs

It's safe to say Spurs had an interesting season last year. A 17th place finish in the Premier League seems absolutely disastrous on the surface, but with a Europa League triumph to go alongside it, it's hard to not feel like the season was a positive one.

Even with the trophy win, Spurs had a transformational summer not just with signings, but with a new manager in Thomas Frank as well.

New signings in Kevin Danso who was on loan at the club last season, Joao Palhinha, Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Kolo Muani have all made the squad.

They join last seasons group of Vicario, Richarlison, Destiny Udogie, Archie Gray, Bergvall, Romero, Dom Solanke, Johnson, Pedro Porro Djed Spence, Odobert, Pape Matar Sarr, Bentancur, Kinsky, Van De Ven and Brandon Austin.

The Tottenham Hotspur squad is arguably the most intriguing and shocking in terms of absentees. James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin all miss out on the registration due to injury.

Koto Takai, Yves Bissouma and £30m summer signing Mathys Tel have all missed out on the squad purely though lack of merit.

Bissouma has fallen out of favour with Thomas Frank, but the most shocking is Mathys Tel whose loan move was made permanent, only for Thomas Frank to seemingly not be keen on having the young forward in his European plans.

Chelsea

Chelsea's high turnover model has been nothing short of controversial, but the growing discourse around them hasn't deterred the club from continuing their big spending trend as they prepare for a return to the Champions League.

That is evident in the registered squad with eight summer signings making the group. Hato, Dario Essugo, Andrey Santos, Gittens, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Estevao and Alejandro Garnacho are all partaking in the group phase.

Robert Sanchez, Jorgenson, Cucurella, Tosin, Benoit Badiashile, Colwill, Chalobah, Reece James, Gusto, Fofana, Enzo Fernandez, Cole Palmer, Caicedo, Pedro Neto and the recently recalled Marc Guiu join those eight new additions.

The recently signed Facundo Buonanotte is the notable absentee for the Blues as he doesn't make the cut for Enzo Maresca.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa missed out on Champions League football on the final day of the last Premier League season and now find themselves occupying a Europa League spot for the coming season.

There is an interesting feel around Aston Villa at the moment and they currently sit second bottom of the Premier League having failed to score in any of their opening three games, the Birmingham club will be hoping they can start their European campaign better in a couple of weeks time, and will likely be feeling they can win the whole tournament if things go to plan.

Villa's squad is as follows: Emi Martinez, Marco Bizot, Matty Cash, new loan signing Lindelof, Ezri Konsa, Mings, Lucas Digne, Pau Torres, Andres Garcia, Ian Maatsen, McGinn, Tielemans, new loan signing Jadon Sancho, Amadou Onana, Kamara, new loan signing Harvey Elliot, Emi Buendia, Watkins, Donyell Malen, Morgan Rogers and new permanent signing Evann Guessand.

The most obvious miss, especially considering Villa's squad is only a 21-man list, is Ross Barkley. Unai Emery hasn't favoured the midfielder since he joined the club and, despite his current short-term injury, he will be disappointed with his omission.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest could easily have gotten Champions League football last season, instead they only qualified for the Conference League, but have ended up in the Europa League after the Crystal Palace situation demoted the Eagles to the Conference League and promoted Forest.

A good amount of signings from the summer are included with John Victor, Savona, James McAtee, Douglas Luiz, Dan Ndoye, Kalimuendo, Igor Jesus and Dilane Bakwa all featured.

The rest of the squad is made up of Matz Sels, Neco Williams, Morato, Murillo, Willy Boly, Milenkovic, Ola Aina, Sangare,, Elliot Anderson, Gibbs-White, Dominguez, Ryan Yates, Hudson-Odoi and Chris Wood.

The clubs record signing, £37.5m Omari Hutchinson who Forest signed from Ipswich this summer, is a surprise omission by Nuno Espirito Santo and it is thus far unclear exactly why such an expensive asset was left out.

Forest's issue is that they only have one homegrown player at the club in Ryan Yates which has meant they have had to leave spots open to comply with rules.

Taiwo Awoniyi, Jota Silva and Angus Gunn have all been left out of the squad, alongside new signings such as Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jair Cunha and Cuiabano, with the latter having returned to Botafogo on loan just a few days after signing for Forest from them.

Crystal Palace

After the debacle that saw them demoted to the Conference League, Crystal Palace managed to qualify after beating Fredrikstad 1-0 across two legs.

Palace have faced some set backs this summer with the sale of Ebere Eze to Arsenal and some unrest around manager Oliver Glasner coming to the fore, but will still feel confident heading into the competition.

Palace's squad looks like this: Dean Henderson, Matthews, Walter Benitez, Daniel Munoz, Tyrick Mitchell, Lacroix, Marc Guehi, Clyne, Borna Sosa, Chris Richards, Chadi Riad, Kporha, Lerma, new signing Christantus Uche, Daichi Kamada, Will Hughes, Wharton, Rak-Sakyi, Justin Devenny, Ismaila Sarr, Nketiah, new signing Yeremy Pino, Mateta and Romain Esse.

There aren't any big omissions from the Palace squad and it is clear that the whole group will need to be utilised this season if they are to keep up with all the extra games they have to play.
