Well, yesterday proved what football is all about. The AFCON final was absolute chaos and had fans sat on the edge of their seats. 120 minutes of football still had us wanting more and even more horrific penalties.
Senegal were crowned eventual winners after beating Morocco 1-0 and had some brilliant performances within the squad along the way. A big performer towards the end of the tournament was 20-year-old centre back Mamadou Sarr, who proved his worth in yesterday's final.
He did not feature in Senegal's first two games but after a Kalidou Koulibaly red card in their third-round match against Benin, Sarr got his first AFCON minutes. It wasn't until the final that Sarr made his first official start for Senegal in what would be the biggest game of his life.
His father, Pape Sarr was a big part of the Senegal team that reached the 2002 AFCON final but did not emerge victorious, so the added pressure to win for your family must've been a lot.
However, he managed to hold his nerves and deliver a huge defensive performance throughout the match and prevented Morocco from scoring a single goal. On top of that, he had a 93% pass completion, five clearances and won three out of his four defensive duels.
It is one way to put yourself on the map after only three international appearances, and it has got Chelsea fans excited.

Despite his limited experience, the 20-year-old centre-back showed impressive composure and maturity on a huge stage and was one of the best players on the pitch.
What a player! 🇸🇳💫 pic.twitter.com/ti6aRXS7g9
What makes Sarr such an intriguing prospect is the levels he has shown at such a young age and that he has the emotional maturity to compose himself at the big stage. That is a welcoming sight for a Chelsea loanee who may big a big part of The Blues future.
The defender has already played over 100 games in his short career and doesn't look like slowing down. His professional career began at youth football playing in the Olympique Lyon academy in the 2021/22 season. He only went on to make two appearances for the club before he joined Belgian side RWDM Brussels on loan however, it was a fairly unsuccessful loan.
In the 2024/25 season, Ligue 1 side Strasbourg decided to take a punt on the defender who at the time had represented France at all youth levels. The €10 million price tag paid for the defender was a risk worth taking, as he made 27 appearances for the club that season and had many clubs thinking about Sarr's potential.
Chelsea then bought Sarr last summer for only €14 million and a reason for this is that both sides are actually sister clubs due to having shared ownership. This has benefitted Chelsea hugely as they handed Sarr an eight year contract. However, to avoid paying more for him next summer, they agreed to buy him on the cheap this summer and sent him back on loan to Strasbourg.
He has continued to play well for the club in 13 appearances this season before he joined with the Senegal squad to play at AFCON.
We now know that pressure doesn't exist for Sarr, so Chelsea fans can start to get excited.
Sarr stands at a considerable height of 6 ft 4 and towers over most attackers that he faces. This makes him a serious threat in the air from set pieces. Think about how valuable Gabriel's height at Arsenal has been for their corner routines.
He has also shown that he can be composed on the ball which is a vital attribute for any defender that plays in the Premier League. New Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior has shown his intent early on in playing out from the back so Sarr would fit in nicely.
His athleticism and calmness on the ball is already well tuned for a player of his age. Keep in mind he has already played under Rosenior at Strasbourg and he said he has all the tools needed to be world class.
Chelsea's defensive issues have been a worry of late with Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana all sharing the spoils.
Next season could be a perfect opportunity to make the position his own and play regularly in the Premier League. It also does make us football fans question why Chelsea are so intent on signing Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes when Sarr is clearly ready for some first-team action.
It is always a guessing game with the Chelsea board as they have spent over €200 million on the likes of Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi, Malo Gusto and Benoît Badiashile. They are either warming the bench or are in the treatment room.
My favourite thing about Mamadou Sarr is how easily he adapts his Game depending on “ partner, stylistically & positionally

Across his time at Strasbourg he’s played RCB & LCB in Back-4 - RCB, CCB & LCB in Back-3.
Throw anything at him, he just gets his head down & performs 💎 pic.twitter.com/0Nc4ggWiEH
