League One Review

Stenhousemuir 2-0 Queen of the South

Aitken (35’), Jamieson (80’)

Stenhousemuir picked up yet another massive win to go top of League One as they defeated in-form Queen of the South thanks to goals Matthew Aitken and Nicky Jamison. Queen of the South had picked up three wins in a row coming into the matchup and climbed to third.

It was a slow start to the game, with Reece Lyon having a great chance The Doonhamers in front, but his header was just wide after a deep ball in. Stenny came back into it, with Kinlay Bilham almost finishing off what would have been an incredibly well-worked goal, but his shot was saved by Ross Stewart.

In the 35th minute, Taylor Charters header backwards was latched onto by Aitken, and he made no mistake, finishing into the back of the net to grab his 5th league goal of the season.

Ten minutes before full-time, Stenny secured all three points, with Nicky Jamieson’s towering header finding corner to double the lead. Stenny move top of the league, one point ahead of Inverness, who have two games in hand. Queen of the South stay third but are now just one point ahead of Alloa.

Kelty Hearts 1-1 Alloa Athletic

Adamson (55’); Arnott (74’)

Coming into this fixture, Kelty were hoping to have better luck against The Wasps, having lost seven of their last nine against the Clackmannanshire side. Eventually, it was a stalemate between the sides for the first time in 12 meetings.

Alloa started the better side, with Lewis Stewart having a chance to put the Wasps in front, but Kyle Gouray saving well. Alloa eventually did take the lead in the 55th minute, when Rangers loanee Calum Adamson fired them in front with a neat finish from just inside the box. Calum Gallagher should have doubled their lead, but his strike one-on-one went wide.

Seemingly from nowhere, Kelty midfielder Aaron Arnott released a thunderbolt from outside the box, finding the back of the net giving Liam McFarlane no chance. Gallagher could and should have put Alloa back in front when a seemingly obvious foul on Gourley wasn’t given, but the 31-year-old forward scooped his effort over the bar.

Kelty also had chances to win it, but neither side could find the decisive goal, with the tie ending 1-1. Kelty sit rock bottom of the table, three points behind Cove Rangers, whilst Alloa are right within the title race, sitting in fourth. They are a point behind Queen of the South and four points behind league leaders Stenhousemuir.
