Trubin Joins Elite Club: Who are the Five Champions League Goal-scoring Goalkeepers?

The Five Goalkeepers who have made themselves UCL Goal-scoring Heroes

It's safe to say that goalkeepers in football are only expected to be important in their own box, keeping shots out for their team and making sure they don't concede any goals.

However, there are is an exclusive club of shot-stoppers who have made themselves heroes at the other end of the pitch. Scoring crucial goals in crucial moments to save their team.

In the UEFA Champions League, only five goalkeepers have scored in the competition since its beginning, this is who they are and the extraordinary moments that made them unique.

Anatoliy Trubin - Benfica (Vs Real Madrid 28/01/26)

The most recent, and for sure one of the most stunning and dramatic Champions League moments in recent years, Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin's 98th minute header for Benfica vs Real Madrid was the culmination of exactly what UEFA would have had in mind when the new format was introduced in 2024.

With the clock ticking in the dying embers of their clash with Los Blancos and with every other match across the continent concluded, Benfica, despite leading 3-2 at Estadio da Luz over record champions Real Madrid, knew that they were still going out of the competition completely, with Olympique Marseille holding the last spot to qualify for the knockout-playoffs in 24th on goal difference.

However, one more goal would turn the tide, and with Madrid down to nine-players following two stoppage time red cards, Benfica had the chance to push. And when they were given a free-kick from deep with what was surely the last action of the game, Jose Mourinho ordered his goalkeeper to go forward.

It would prove to be a genius move.

The delivery was perfect, and the Ukrainian stopper rose highest and planted a superb header past Thibaut Courtois to spark wild scenes all across the stadium, with the Benfica substitutes pouring onto the pitch to celebrate with their hero and Mourinho sprinting down the touchline like it was Old Trafford in 2004 all over again.

The referee brought the game to a close almost immediately, with Trubin's golden moment sending Benfica through by just that one single header.

Ivan Provedel - Lazio (Vs Atletico Madrid 19/9/23)

Matchday one of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League campaign kicked off with a flyer in Rome, as one of the most dramatic moments of the entire campaign took place in the Italian capital.

Group E saw Lazio match with Atletico Madrid in the first match-week of that season's competition, and Diego Simeone's visiting side took the lead at the Stadio Olimpico through Pablo Barrios midway through the first half.

Lazio pushed for an equaliser, but despite having 18 shots heading into stoppage time, they couldn't find a way past the famously stubborn Atletico defence.

With four minutes of stoppage time added on, it looked like Lazio would be starting their first Champions League campaign in three years with defeat at home, however they were given a lifeline in the last minute of added time through a corner, with goalkeeper Ivan Provedel coming forward in an attempt to salvage a point.

The set piece was played short towards the edge of the box to midfielder Luis Alberto, and the Spaniard fired in a cross, which was met with a powerful header from Provedel who sneaked in beyond the Atletico defenders with a perfectly timed run.

It was an extraordinary moment, as Lazio's number 94 scored in the 94th minute to earn his side a point, and the goal would prove key as the Italian side would quality in second place of the group.

Vincent Enyeama - H. Tel Aviv (vs Lyon 29/9/10)

Before Proveldel's equalising header vs Atletico, it had been over 12 years since a goalkeeper had netted in the UEFA Champions League. However, unlike the the Italian goalkeeper and Trubin's headers, this goal by former Nigeria captain Vincent Enyeama unfortunately failed to count for much.

During Enyeama's time with Hapoel Tel Aviv, the stopper often took penalties for his side, including scoring in the 2009-2010 cup final, as his side completed a domestic double alongside the league title. And scored over 10 goals for the club in a four year spell.

In September 2010, Hapoel hosted then Ligue 1 champions Lyon in Tel Aviv on matchday two of the group stages in group B. However, the French side raced into a two-goal lead in the first half with a brace from Michel Bastos, however hope was given to the home side as they were awarded a penalty with ten minutes of normal time to play.

As was common practice, Enyeama stepped forwards from the other end of the pitch to take the spot-kick, and he slotted his effort past his opposite stopper to pull his side back into the game at 1-2.

Enyeama's spot-kick made him just the third goalkeeper to score in the competition at the time. However, unfortunately for him and his team they wouldn't find an equaliser, and ended up losing 1-3 after conceding late on in stoppage time.

Sinan Bolat - Standard Liege (vs AZ Alkmaar 9/12/09)

Just like Trubin and Provedel over 15 years after, Sinan Bolat scored a last minute header to rescue his side in the Champions League.

Only one goalkeeper had scored in the competition before the Turkish stopper scored vs AZ Alkmaar for Belgian side Standard Liege in December 2009.

AZ took the lead in Belgium in the first half through future PSV and Sunderland winger Jeremain Lens, and with the game entering the final stages it looked like the Dutch side were going to hold on to claim a potentially crucial victory in group H.

But in the final moments, Standard Liege stopper Bolat came forward for a free-kick, the set-piece was swung in towards the Turk at the back post, and he smashed home a header into the near top corner to put the game level at 1-1 in the final minute.

The joy in the celebrations were there for all to see. However, Standard Liege would still unfortunately go on to finish bottom of the group, but Bolat's goal was still an unforgettable moment for fans of the Belgian side.

Hans-Jõrg Butt - Hamburg/Leverkusen/Bayern Munich (vs Juventus x3, 2000-2009)

German goalkeeper Hans-Jõrg Butt was the first goalkeeper to score in the UEFA Champions League, however, what makes him unique is that he is the only goalkeeper to score in the competition on multiple occasions, and he did it for three different clubs. But even more uniquely, all three of his Champions League's strikes were against the same side.

Butt was known to take penalties throughout his career, starting at VfB Oldenburg, where he scored five goals. He moved to Hamburg in 1997 and continued his penalty scoring exploits, scoring seven goals from the spot in his first season, and nine in the following campaign.

He scored his first goal in the Champions League for Hamburg in 2000, scoring a second half spotkick as the German side drew 4-4 in a classic encounter vs Juventus.

But two years later, Butt would score again in the Champions League, and again against the Turin side for Bayer Leverkusen, helping his new side beat the Italians 3-1 on their way to reaching the final. Becoming the first, and so far only, goalkeeper to score multiple times in Europe's premier competition.

However, that was still not the end of Butt's scoring in the Champions League vs Juventus as, after moving to Bayern Munich in 2008, one year later Butt faced Juventus once again. Once again he was presented with the chance to score from the spot and he took that chance, scoring a first-half equaliser to set Bayern on their way to a thumping 1-4 away win.

Butt's feat is one that is yet to be matched on the European stage, and it's unlikely it ever will be.
