Last Five Results when Arsenal have played Spurs:
Arsenal finished second on 89 points, two points behind champions Manchester City on 91 points, in what was an enthralling title chase. Summer signings Declan Rice and Kai Havertz slotted into the side almost immediately, while the defensive excellence we saw the previous season from William Saliba and Gabriel Magahaes continued.
The Gunner’s end of season form was something to behold, winning all of their last six games, and losing only one league game since the turn of the year. However, that defeat, a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, was what cost them the title. Had they picked up three points from that game, their form in the closing stages would have carried them to their first League title since 2004.
They were unlucky in that they came up against a typically ruthless Manchester City side that simply refused to drop points, but their message following the title run in was clear: we’re here to stay.
Best Result - Arsenal 5-0 Chelsea. (Trossard 4’, White 52’, 70’, Havertz 57’, 65’).
Worst Result - Arsenal 0-2 West Ham. (Soucek 13’, Mavropanos 55’).
Former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta takes the reins for his fifth full season in charge of the Gunners. They have seen exponential improvement since his appointment in December of 2019, and their end of season points total has increased season on season with the Spaniard in charge.
It will be a tough task to beat their tally from last season, but with a couple of shrewd signings, Arteta would almost certainly create his strongest Arsenal squad to date.
A perfect example of shrewd business, Odegaard has gone from strength to strength since joining the Gunners for £35 million after a season long loan for Real Madrid. While any other side would be hurt in letting Odegaard leave, Real Madrid have incredible depth in midfield, with Bellingham, Camavinga, Tchouameni, Valverde and Modric all battling for the same positions.
So in letting Odegaard go, Madrid made a healthy profit from his sale, while also removing a little competition in their already stacked central third. However, one club's loss is another's gain, and with 40 goals and assists in the last two seasons, missing just three league games in the process, Odegaard runs the Arsenal midfield as his own.
Made captain at just 24 years of age, Odegaard has all the hallmark’s of Premier League greatness. A leader on and off the pitch, and with more tricks up his sleeve than a magician, keeping him fit and happy is crucial if Arsenal are to topple Man City from the pinnacle of English football.
Fresh off the back of an intense title showdown with Manchester City, which saw them miss out on the Premier league trophy by just two points, Arsenal come into the season seemingly back to their best.
There is a great sense of togetherness in Mikel Arteta’s young squad (average age of 25.6 years old), as shown on many occasions last season in post-match celebrations, and his man management as well as his obvious tactical acumen has instilled his players with belief that they can achieve something great under him.
With a squad filled to the brim with talented names, there is no reason why Arsenal can’t push Manchester City all the way again. However, Pep Guardiola’s side have vastly superior experience in successful title run-ins, and I think this alone will see Arsenal pick up another runners up medal.
