Last five results when Fulham have met Chelsea:
Finishing 13th in the league, it was a middle of the road kind of season for the South-East Londoners. They impressed in stages, such as with a 3-0 win against Tottenham, or with back-to-back 5-0 wins over Nottingham Forest and West Ham respectively, but for the most part, their form was inconsistent, which cost them opportunities to rise up the table.
Their form in the late stages of the campaign specifically cost them, as they won just two of their last 9 games
Importantly, most of the time they picked up points against the teams they were expected to do so against, and this carried them clear of any possibility of a relegation scrap.
After a solid mid-table finish, Fulham now have a platform to build off, and if they make the right moves this summer, they could see themselves surge into the top 10 by May.
Best result: Fulham 5-0 West Ham. (Jimenez 22', Willian 31', Adarabioyo 41', Wilson 60', Vinicius 89').
Worst result: Fulham 0-4 Manchester City. (Gvardiol 13', 71', Foden 59', Alvarez 90+6').
Marco Silva is set to take charge of his 4th successive season at the Cottagers. The former Everton man took charge in July of 2021, right after Fulham had been relegated from the top flight. His steady hand guided them straight back up as champions of the second tier, and the following season, his side sealed a superb top half finish.
Last season, Silva lost a little of the momentum he had picked up, finishing four places lower than the previous campaign. This can primarily be attributed to the loss of star striker Alexandar Mitrovic, who was tempted to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Raul Jimenez couldn't fill the gap left by him, and 2021 signing Rodrigo Muniz only started coming good in the second half of the season.
Silva likes his side to be in control of the game, but is willing to sacrifice possession for quick transitions into attack which create the majority of Fulham’s chances. With a talented squad at his disposal, Silva has almost all the tools to execute his vision, but Fulham will have to dip into the transfer market sooner or later to strengthen the depth of the squad.
Pereira has done brilliantly to bounce back from what was a disappointing spell with parent club Manchester United. After being sent on a handful of loans across multiple continents, United eventually deemed him surplus to their requirements, and so Fulham nipped in with an £8 million offer.
Since then, he has become a crucial cog in the center of the field for the Londoners. His all action displays, in which he plays a big part in defense and attack, have even drawn interest from Chelsea over the summer transfer window, a reflection on how his stock has risen since leaving Manchester.
Scoring 3 goals and providing a further 7 assists in 37 games last season, Pereira is one of the first names on the team sheet, and his link between the back and front lines is vital in Silva’s transitional style of play. It looks like his value is only going to rise in the coming season.
In the early stages of the transfer window, Fulham appeared happy to let the other clubs get their business out of the way, removing competition for the signatures they were preparing to chase.
Now having made 3 deals in a week, they seem to be addressing the holes in their squad left by the departing Adarabioyo and De Cordova-Reid. However, Fulham are yet to sign a quality replacement for Joao Palhinha, who was one of, if not their best player last season.
Should they find the right man to fill this gap, I have belief they will be able to slightly improve, propelling themselves into the upper mid table.
